The next move - a 250mW + 637nm HL6388MG

This is a little preemptive, but having just completely a 180mW 637nm HL63133DG build (here) I'm itching for an even brighter red.

Where to next? The HL6388M (here) is a multi-mode diode that won't have as awesome beam specs as that 63133DG. In fact, it's slightly (just slightly) worse than a 445 in terms of divergence, and has a bigger emitter too. Having said that, I think I'll still be happy with the output, and with this diode in general. My mind is just desperate to enjoy brighter reds.

I'd like to use this thread to track my latest quest towards a 250mW+, 637nm RED. My intention is to drive this diode high enough to hit 300mW. If it doesn't achieve that goal, and dies first, then so be it. The beginning of this quest starts with the requirement for a unique host. And that's where I would like to begin by soliciting input. Any flashlight host is fair game, within the following parameters:

1) 2x lithium ion cell capable
---- This means anything that can take 1x18650 (because it will take 2x 16340 or 2x 18350)
---- Anything that takes 2xAA or 2xAAA or 3xAAA (because it will take 2x 14500 or 2x 10440)
---- Or 2x any other lithium ion cell (CR2s, etc)

2) I prefer sleak and sexy over bulky and intimidating.

3) I prefer silver/gray/chrome/shiny over black/colours.

Only the first parameter is set in stone, the others are flexible. Input is appreciated. I think I've seen every single host on DX a million times over, which probably means that it's just about time for someone else to point out an awesome host that I've overlooked :)

Hmm..What about something like this one:

$25.00 - Aurora SH-272 CREE Q4-WC 2-Mode 220-Lumen White LED Flashlight with Strap - Red (1*18650) - 18650 Cree Flashlights

I imagine it's a little too pink for your liking, but see that's all by design so that you won't hang onto it long after you build it and will sell it someone here for a a good price.

And yeah I know I'm completely ignoring #3 above. :)

Seriously, I don't think I have see any "red" bodied Aurora's around here, at least not since I have been here. (I didn't actually search though!) Of course I don't know anything about this one, so I don't know if any of the commonly made heatsinks will fit it, or it would have to be a custom one.

I also like the looks of the Nebo Redline. There is something to be said about at least having an accent color on the body that will show the color of the laser. Although I'm having a hard time telling if you would be able to keep the red "ring" after gutting it for a laser.

Again, I have no idea if either host is actually suitable for a laser, just looking around for hosts that don't cost a fortune and I haven't seen a ton of around here before.

Looks like the Redline has at least been looked at before. Here is a post with pics of it broken down. Looks like you would be able to keep the red ring.

The only killed is that the "pink" and "red" would clash with the red-orange beam ;p
I think I need to stick to non-colours.

I knew I liked it for some reason. At least we have similar tastes.

That's what happens when you stay up all night reading the forums. The retention just isn't there anymore. :banghead:

I now return you to the more experienced users that actually pay attention around here.

I want to contribute to this. Sounds epic. I have a solarforce L2 host in the works (waiting for lights to arrive) thats quite sleek.

Wish I had the budget you have RHD! I am envious!

Nonetheless, I can't wait to see this one finished! And how are you able to afford shelling out almost four hundred dollars for a single diode?!

Woflman: I too wish I actually had the budget I have ;)

BH: Love that host! I think it's too big with 2x 18650 for my purposes here. But if you don't scoop one of those and make it into a laser soon, I just might have to ;)

Here are the two options I've gone with, plus potentially an L2:
$27.40 - UniqueFire UF-DT1 Cree XP-Q3-7B 160-Lumen Warm White LED Flashlight with Strap - Silver (1*18650) - 18650 Cree Flashlights
$34.28 - Spicer Fire X-07 Cree Q5-WC 2-Mode 230-Lumen LED Flashlight (1*18650) - Cree Lights

They're on their way to get heatsinks made as we speak!

I've got the smaller 16340 one coming to me too - just for flashlight's sake - it's nice eh?
