OLD POST- new post to read.. under this.

hello boys... after 2 hours i wil delete this post. but i urgently need an help to decide if add an ir filter or not in a laser that i am purchasing from rayfooss. it is an handeld laser.. tested stable about 330.. peak 355....

now before shipment i should choose if faona add an ir filter or not. she said me this will cause 15%-20% power lose.

so.. 20% of 330 is 50mw. 280mw of pure green.

i dont' know what to do... because for many reasons i should KEEP for alot of time this laser.... i spend money.. and at this power i am stopping to buy others greennies.... so i like TO BURN... and maybe IR can help me to be happier with my purchase.....

however.. i don't know if IR are REALLY a problem for eyes... but i think not.. because i only point at sky or wall not so much near to me...

however i don't know if adding an ir filter could WORSEN the beam quality and divergence....

i don't know if the filter is well made or could change the qquality of the beam....

"We have finished the laser with IR this morning. After testing the power output is in range of 255mw-275mw.

did the crystal in the FGB
...... i notice the "old" model i ordered is at 60sec duty circle.. the new at 300sec. and ....

i read CIRCUIT = ACC on the old.. and CIRCUIT = APC in the new.
what's the difference bewteen apc and acc circuits?

is that new laser THE SAME sold by skylasers?

think of it in terms of a 50mw IR with no protection.. You are going to be burning shit up close with red goggles to stop the green, does nothing for IR. So 1 bad reflection and you got some eye burns. Seems like an easy decision to me, get the filter and save your eyes.

I will suggest to choose the filter, too ..... an undamaged eye worth always a lot more than a small reduction in power ..... ;)

An IR filter will not affect the beam quality in any way, unless the person who installs it gets finger prints on it or worse scratches it.

Other than that its a must if you plan on burning things with single wavelength goggles that protect from 532nm only...

ok thank you very much.. i did not think about goggles...... i forgot they only stop green... and let pass 50mw of light that is not so much. aven if... 50mw are with HUGE divergence.. and not concentrated like normal lasers... but yes... you are right...

now i rely by mail to faona that i would the filter... thank you!

my fear is that ir lense are not high quality and could minimallu change the beam... and that could be 0.2..0.4 mrad more...

I would choose to not have the filter. 280mW is not going to go easier on the eyes than 400mW+ (and it's unlikely there is that 100mW+ of IR anyways).

IMHO IR filters for hobbyists are only needed in lasers that are designed to hit the eye, such as show lasers during crowd scanning.

i know that also 280mw can damage eyes.... BUT if i burt things and see throught red glasses.... the ir light is not blocked by glasses....

do you think that and IR filter could also block a little of green?
i've heard this.. but i think it happens only with HIGH QUALITY filters.. over98%....

rayfoss should have cheap filter of 90%95% i think...

One pair of goggles will NOT stop 1064nm and 532nm wavelengths at the same time.

Option #1:
If you are not worried about 50mw of 1064nm reflecting really close to your face (where you will be doing the most burning) then don't get the IR filter.

Option #2:
If you are worried about 50mw of unfiltered infra-red light that can permanently damage your eyes.. GET THE FILTER.

They do make goggles that block 532nm and 1064nm at the same time. They're just not that common.

For some reason people tend to think that the IR leaving a DPSS laser 'diverges too quickly and is harmless', this is not always the case.

I built a 532nm labby a while back, here is a quote from post #9 in that thread and the link below. Take it as you may... This was a laser that at first hit only 200mW and after some fine tuning was up to 300mW.

generally IR have very high divergence.... most of laser pointer unfiltered.....if metered with a LPM change the power if you read it at 3cm... 7 cm... 10 cm... 15 cm... 30 cm... and the dot is STILL enterely pointing in the SENSOR.
so much difference is because ir have big divergence in most of cases.

your build is nice :)

Get the filter. You can always remove it if you aren't happy with it. Plus all the safety reasons above.

I'd surely upgrade for that price, I have the 200mW focusable from SkyLasers and I love it, mine has a 3mm beam @ aperture and a .88mRad when focused to infinity, it's a great laser.
