Greg at StoneTek sent me a sample of his new red laser diode offering for me to test.  This is his new SLD1239JL-54 diode.
The testing was done using an Aixiz housing and no TEC cooling.  A current limited power supply was used for constant current plus an LPM-1 power meter with an ND-8 filter.

The current was ramped up as shown on my "old school"  :D graph at the bottom.  Current was increased to 420 mA but it was found that anything over 400 mA only produces more heat.  The curve gets very flat at the top.

I ran the diode for a total of 14 hours at 400 mA in 4 sessions (4,4,3,3 hours) and noticed no degredation in power out or beam quality.  The power stayed at 240 mW +/- 3 mW during the test.

Good to see Greg back with new diodes.

Very nice, where you using an aixiz acrylic lens?

These diodes look nice! Just a minor correction, his site is called StoneTek, not StoneTech ;) Their price is getting closer to a 20x DVD burner though, but you don't have to harvest these diodes.

Yes -- I use an opened plastic lens.
Name corrected -- Thanks.....

Re: StoneTek  SLD1239JL Diodes

Yea these were more expensive from the start, they are quality. But what i dont get is why are the ratings in the pdf so low but then, when actually testing the diode, the outputs are much higher. imagine these with a glass lens the output would be 30mw higher at 400ma. Time to buy one

Holly crap, if that was done with an acrylic lens, imagine how high the output will be with a glass lens.

These could get really close to the power of an open can diode.

Maybe ....... The jury is still out on this glass/plastic configuration.
It has been my experience that I get more with an "opened" plastic lens than a glass. This may be due in part that the plastic seems to get closer to the LD gathering more photons  .. I admit that I've never done measurements to confirm this.

Yeah you're right, have you used a meredith glass lens? Some people have gotten better results from it rather than the aixiz one. I guess I got a little excited for a moment. ;D

Chido --

You have the question in your hands ;D ;D Test a diode with plastic, glass and Merideth lenses. There may be a close lens assembly to get a few more mW. Might even be worth the $. I've never had a Merideth glass to try. I'd be real interested especially for BluRay.

Wow 14 hours at 400ma? I'd never have guessed. How much improvement is this over the regular 39JL?

I would gladly test the diode with all three lenses if I had money right now, and IF I had a laser power meter. :(

PFluff -- A regular 39JL ?? I'm only familiar with the 1239JL as provided.
Greg did not say mine was special. I believe my sample is representative of the lot he has.

ok then pretend i said 36vl ;)

And could you please tell me the volts at 300 and 200? thanks!

Fluff --

I didn't think anyone would be interested in the lower power settings. ;)
Just for you --- 2.66 volts @ 200 mA and 3.01 volts at 300 mA.

Enjoy ---

Interesting results, i've had a couple of these -54 diodes dying at much lower currents in portable applications... somehow the runtime figures here seem amazing.

Makes it more interesting to do some TEC work for the labby-style lasers, as well as on better driver design.
