I don't see the point Tom... They're all linear driver IC's, and the ones that aren't seem to be just PWM chips.

It would be easier to just use an LM1117 instead...

^ My thoughts exactly :(

They would probably be useful for color mixing and scanner applications, but there is no point to have all the extra features if it's going in a handheld.

I could use a driver with a second source for an on/off LED

I was thinking that there aren't very many ways to get 3A from a single IC right now...

Am I mistaken there? In theory, you could use this IC IC-HG QFN28 5X5 - 3 A Laser Switch - iC-Haus - SemiconductorStore.com to build a 3A driver... No?

I'm an admitted noob on the electronics. I haven't dabbled in years and am trying to come up to speed, so I might be missing something basic. But I was thinking that you could build a 3A driver with that chip paralleled.

The problem is not if it is possible...
On this Forum it is more a question of "can I get it for
free or $1.00 or less"...

There are many ways to skin a cat....

*Ahem* one can get 3A out of a BlitzBuck ;)

But really, there are lots of ways to get 3A out. The LM1085 can do 3A, as can the BlitzBuck and the X-Drive.
