Ok after seeing Diachi's scanner pictures post here
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1234571585
and working out how they were done I gave it a shot myself with manual settings on my camera. Pretty cool results I think.

how was this done?

I just set up my camera for 6 seconds exposure and a high aperture setting and then turned on my scanner. Your basically seeing each frame of th effect, or thats how I would describe it.

You should be able to do the same with a sprograph, just the results would be limited to spiral shapes.

what speed do you scan at and what power is the laser you scan with?

It's a 10k scanner and the laser is above its rated 50mW green. I have no power meter but it lights matches so its pretty bright.

I inspired someone :)

Im in school just now, but I'll take a look at the pictures when I get home and edit this post.
