Review of Jake21's Blu-Ray and Red burner

Hi, yesterday i recieived the two lasers i orderd from jake21, the Bu-Ray and the red burner. It came in a cardboard box labelled "plastic box" and the customs didn't open it to check. Delivery took about a week and a half to Western Australia.

Now the Blu-Ray is awesome! 8-) The diode is from a PS3 and it can pop balloons about 5-10cm away after you focus it to a pinpoint which isnt all that hard. However, sadly it wont light a match but i didnt expect it to. Opened it is actually very simple inside. The diode is connected to a small circuit board and is connected to a 9v battery. The switch is a momentary on/off switch which i find quite annoying. I have to push down on it hard to make the blu-ray light up and sometimes i dont press hard enough. When you shake the laser a bit you can hear the battery moving around because it has nothing to stop it. It makes me feel as if i could break the insides. The laser can make glow in dark stickers glow and its cool. After playing around with it i find it a good laser that IMO is quite eye safe since its only around 10-20mw but I dont have the proper equipment to test it.

Now the Red laser is quite low priced. However, the outrageous cost for the batteries here in Australia are rediculous! I mean $17 for one CR123 battery, and I need two of them. Sadly i havent got the money to buy any batteries for it yet so i will give more info when i do get to test it out. The insides of this seems much more tight and proffesional than the blu-ray and it has a battery holder, unlike the blu-ray. There are many wires and glue with a much more complex circuit board IMO. I feel this is a better deal than the "dilda lazor" because i didnt have to wait a month for it. I will write more about it when i get to test its burning capabilities.

I guess the Blu-ray was an ok deal at 125 USD and the red burner was a great bargain IMO for 40USD

EDIT IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!!!
i just got the cr123's (energizer e2 lithiums) and loaded them into the red burner and guess what happened? the batteries overheated in about 2 seconds and burnt my hand. and there was barely any light coming out! i've sent jake21 a pm about getting my money back. lucky i didnt close it otherwise the batts might of exploded.



ANOTHER EDIT: well im quite happy about the customer service from jake21. i pm'd him about a few hours ago and we have already made an agreement on a replacement laser free of charge. its even going to be in a dorcy jr instead of a box. great guy and customer service!
 





Nice pics! I'm totally gonna get a blu-ray now, if just for the sheer shock value to other people when I shine it! :D

With the second picture from the top, what are you shining it at? The beam just appears half way along the length, then disappears again close to the dot, so you must of shined it through something. But what?

i shined it through the fish tank in my room 8-) the beam looks cool ey?

The beam doesn't even look like a violet color, it looks similar to that of a 488nm argon laser! I guess that it fluoresces in the water. 8-)

You can use double sided tape to hold your 9v in place, that’s what I do, but then I also use a rechargeable NiMh with a charger plug then permanently close up the unit.

It shouldn't be hard. Just take the old switch out and solder the wires onto the new one.

You didn't try to charge them, did you ? They were regular CR123's - and you loaded them in properly, and they overheated rapidly ?

You didn't try to charge them, did you ?  They were regular CR123's - and you loaded them in properly, and they overheated rapidly ?[/quote]
im not stupid. i wouldnt charge 2 brand new cr123 e2 lithiums. i put the batteries in the correct way. and then in about a few seconds i tried to turn it on and nothing happened. i felt the batteries just in time and i pulled them out, but my hand got burned :'( they overheat even when its off but i dont think the switch works either because theres a very faint red when the switch is switched on and off.

EDIT: the batteries are 3.0v cr123's.

EDIT: senkat im sorry for being rude in my first sentence "im not stupid" but i was very angry that i waited 2 weeks and wasted 20 bucks for batteries on a laser that didnt work. please forgive me. :'(
 
i've made another edit. jake21 has agreed on a replacement laser free of charge. read the "another edit" under the video of the blu-ray popping a balloon :)

Fresert - no worries at all - I for one have NEVER lost my temper (HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!) Yeah, right ! LOL ! I am glad he is making it right for you - if he is reading this, he should post in this thread what was wrong with it when he gets it back from you - he could save someone lots of greif, and possibly pain too, from the sound of it ! You weren't out of line - it's good :)

i think the battery pack is connected wrong to the circuit and LD. only the battery closest to the LD gets overheated, the one at the end stays the same.there is a black wire which is connected to the circuit board which is connected to nothing but glued on to another wire. so no metal contacts there, maybe thats the problem... :-/
