Hi everyone.

This is my first post here so, I hope is in the right place and also don't mind my English please.

I want to built or buy a 1W or 2W blue laser for astronomy purpose but I have no clue if the ones on eBay are good or not.

Searching on the web I find this place and I though is the best place to ask about it.

Here are my questions:

1: I want to built my one adjustable blue laser but I have not idea how or where I need to buy all the components. I know here is all the information that I'm looking for but I do really want to hear from you guys about this matter.

2: I want to ask if this kind of laser is good:

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=141393305550

I'm looking to built or buy a medium or large size laser to mount on my telescope.

I hope I explain myself good and thanks for all the help.

Blue is a BAD idea for serious astronomy. To get enough power to have a reasonable beam for pointing, you'll have too much local brightness and screw up your night vision. If you are REALLY talking about an astronomy LASER get w 30-50mW Green module and build with that.

Thanks for the replay.

I do own a green laser pointer, also I know what do you mean.. But I'll use the blue laser for another research project.

So, I'm asking again what do I need to built my own blue laser?

Sometimes buying laser parts off eBay is a bit of a gamble. I would recommend checking out SurvivalLasers.com. It is a very well known site and a good place for buying laser parts. Also, on a lot of submarines, they use deep red or blue because those colors don't ruin your night vision by themselves. It leaves me with more assumptions but I'm not quite sure it its the same with lasers or not. But as 123splat said, green are pretty good lasers for astronomy due to the low beam divergence as compared to blue. They also typically have further range and with a brighter beam mW to mW. But both laser colors will still work, green will just bit a bit easier to use.

So after the link what do I need to know to built me laser?

Thanks and I'm sorry for asking too much.

Well, I've never actually built a laser yet so I can't really help you on the subject. I'm just getting started in the laser hobby as well. Maybe if ya looked up YouTube videos on how to build lasers, you could get a feel for how they are put together. Sorry I can't help much on that one.

Thanks for all the help.

we could help more IF you would add your location in YOUR PROFILE--

did you search 'build a laser'?

do that from the tutorial section

also your first post needs to be in the 'welcome' section without asking favors so quickly. I know a lot of starwatchers and NONE use a blue laser--
tell us all about your safety glasses/goggles- what is the OD and wavelength they protect you from...

do you have everything it takes to build a laser from just parts??

ESD protection?
Grounded soldering station?
The correct solder & flux??
dummy load?
DMM?
adjustable PS?
diode pressing tools?
helping hands?
pin-outs?
proper heat sinks?
just for starters--

:tsk:

you are not really ready are you??

only a fool would risk an expensive diode by using it for the first ever build as MANY fail the 1st time ( I did) so if its just a 10$USD 405 OR RED less pain when you kill it--

how- ??
prolly forgetting to short all caps--do you know what that is??
you better--

No problem man!
And for basic tutorials on how lasers are put together.... I haven't found any yet. Was looking at the stickies and couldn't find where there was some information on how to build a basic blue laser and all the parts you would need and where they go. Lol if there is a thread, I would LOVE to know of it. I too would like just a basic guide to building a laser. Once again, sorry I don't know :undecided:, I will let you know if I do find anything or if someone tells me, "Duh! Its right here Newb!" Lol, I'll be ready for that too.

really you found nothing of help hidden in the 'tutorials' section?? you looked at those from DTR??
with all the pics making it easy to follow??

ones on building other colors are still relevent to your needs-=
better get the right PIN-OUT before you do anything they are NOT all the same.

start with cheap- or you will regret-

& there are NO WARRANTEES on diodes- just touching with bare hand can end its life.

Ok found a good thread. Iv'e been using the search entry on the top of the page. Never thought of using the one with the Google search engine on the bottom. Thanks Hakzaw1 for the advice on just doing a search. Made me think a bit more. I stopped using the LPF made search entry cause it never came up with the threads I was looking for but now I know what to use. Here's the thread:

EDIT: Lol sorry Hacksaw, You are posting right before I am. And I'll be quiet now, guess I'm not ready to start helping other members yet.

Well I'm sorry for post something in the wrong section and sorry for asking a favor "too quick" how long do I need to ask a favor? A month or how many post do I need in order to ask for a favor. Thanks for the scolding I'm sorry for not have you knowledge in all this stuff about laser.

Sorry for bother all of you guys but, I better go away because I really don't like when people use his knowledge to intimidate the others.

Hope you are happy now.

Thanks to the other users for the help.

yr very welcome- heed my warnings - I have made many mistakes- i 'own' them & they are mine you newcomers have NO RIGHT to make them again- go find your own mistakes and mess-ups.
i do pro bono support for AixiZ- wish I had 50 cents for every buyer who starts like this: " you sold me a bad diode and or driver- its dead send another" then they come back WTW? you sold me another bad one-

- IDTS--

If you fail and do not make a change to how you do things you will keep failing forever.

Break any of the 'rules' for building & you wil have regrets==

ever pressed a diode?? good idea to start with a $600 1W green diode- why waste time learning with free IR diodes that are the same size but have NO VALUE-??

these cans are very soft can get crushed easily and need to be set properly to make good heat transfer-

@ surefire
Zack-- aka laserman 121 lives near you and has lots of experience- fine young man & all at SELEM have enjoyed him being at the last 5 events-

He held a LEM in his folks garage and wants to do another meet--
xirrous also may be close.

check the member map- hands-on help is the best

@aboy since you dont want us to know where you live i have nothing for you.

edit --the above post was made before i posted this one--

I dont believe in both spoonfeeding AND sugar coating too-

maybe this forum is not right for you-

you could have done better homework on your own-

If I am NOT right about your abilities then I am sorry BUT i think you are seeing that building is not all that easy and you have much to learn- if that makes you want to go away--bye

BUT if you stay the course and learn more you will be happy.

No waiting is required after you make a nice intro in the welcome section- I suggest reading those others have made and see all the nice welcomes they got back-after that find the right section and ask any question you cannot find an answer by search LPF or Google OR Dr Sam's laser FAQ--

go read 'How to get along on forums'

I'll stay but I'll ignore you.

If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.
Try listening to what he is saying, rather than trying to keep the chip on your shoulder. Hak is a little brusk at times, but he knows far more than you do about the subject, so you would do far better listening and learning.

But then, if you are too foolish and impatient (as it seems), then go ahead, waste a bunch of money on a good diode, and kill it through stupidity......

Ok. I understand I need to be patience and I need to listen.

But you right I'll listen him (Hak) and every one here.

I'll say SORRY. Yesterday was a really a hard day.

Just one think I'm going to built a laser one day.. But I'm not idiot to pretend to do that with out knowledge about the subject. I am not an idiot OK.

Lest start again and I'll say SORRY gain to Hak and to you.

PS. Sorry for my English.
