Would it be possible to build a 1w portable unit powered only from a 12v lead acid battery?
How much would it cost? How much space would it require without using active cooling?
Considering a 12v 3A/h battery, how long would the runtime be at 15°C ?
Thanks.

You can't make a blue laser yourself. They require rare crystals that need to be precisely aligned to work properly.
If you really want a powerful blue you can buy them from laserglow for about $18,000

If you want it portable it would probably be the size of a suitcase and really heavy :p

The basic idea would be a 80cm long tube with a 15cm diameter, it should include all the stuff (battery, laser, cooling, ecc.).
Is this possible to make? $18,000 is a high price, would it drop if I used a bluray (that I know is cheaper) instead of a true blue?

a friend of a friend type thing

he had a 100mw blue and replaced the 808nm with a 9watt 808nm diode and its now hitting 500mw

so to get 1watt.........

*sigh* No. They don't even come close to making 1W Blu-Ray's, and there's no way you can get a 473nm blue into a portable form factor. Unless you mean small-enough-to-stick-it-in-the-back-of-a-truck portable.

why do people ask stupid questing, it would cost more to make a blue than to buy one premade most likely

Maybe because someone might need a custom built unit to fill specific purposes...

Does that specific purpose involve carrying around a giant lab laser+a very heavy backpack containing a 12V lead-acid battery+an inverter+the laser driver?

That really is the only way you are going to get a portable high powered blue.

efficiency of blue lasers is only around 1-2% so you'd need approx 100 watts to drive the pump diode, then probably another 20 watts for cooling, drawing that from 12v would mean a power draw of 10 amps - you'd need a hefty battery to even run it more than a few minutes

plus the fact that there is absolutely no market for a portable laser of that wavelength and power

Maybe someone should consider you'd need over 50,000 dollars and a company willing to undertake the ordeal to make a 1W portable blue.

In other words there is no real possibility of building it?
Correct. It might be possible in future if they ever perfect blue laser diodes.

At this point I've got only one question to ask: how many years will be necessary to buy blue lasers at the same price we can buy green ones today?

My guestimate is AT LEAST 3-5 years.

Getting a 1 Watt green is hard enough.Maybe blues are gonna go down in price but they'll still be as inefficiend as lond as they're DPSS.And yes, maybe they're gonna perfect blue and green diodes but you still won't be able to get 1W just like we can't get 1W of red right now. :p
I can't imagine what you wanna do with a 1W portable blue but there are easier ways to hunt vampires you know ::)
