I've been planning on making the famous "Pocket Pal" Blu-Ray laser, but the prices stuns me.
Before everything i order, i make a list of it, just to see what it will totally cost. There's one thing i wonder about, how can someone make a pocket pal for 55$?  Here's what i've calculated:

Host(I've chosen the cheap one): http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.46 3$

Driver(I will have to take preset current): http://hacylon.case.edu/ebay/laser_diode/Micro_FlexDrive.php     27$

Housing/module: http://hightechdealz.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=11    4$

Diode: http://hightechdealz.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=4      26,5$

Heatsink: custom made from jayrob  23$

Total(Withour shipping on some of the items):   83,5$

The build is here: http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1213338268

(I've never made a laser, so if i'm missing something, please say it!:p)

If i use the "Micro Drive", is there anything i should change when making it, according to the guide i've mentioned?

- The noob, Jonas

EDIT: Can someone point out an okay soldering iron, the one i got is to big. Will not spend plenty on it :)

Omg drew that's amazing!!

I think i'll order a couple now :)

not NOW but when i've figured things out ;)

EDIT:

You know if the Aixiz module has focus? I mean easily accesable focus :)

I guess i will need the "dummy load" too, i'm not much into electronics, is it hard to use it? (I mean adjust it to for example "blu-ray"?) And is it hard to change flexdriver current?

You might want to remove that link from your post and use the forum link instead of the website link...Drew has made is perfectly clear that he does not want the link anywhere else on the forum.

I see you error.... you are quoting a FlexDrive not a Rkcstr Driver...

DX Host           $  3.00
AixiZ Housing   $  4.00
LD (Drew)        $10.50
Rkcstr Kit         $11.25
Heat Sink         $23.00

        Total       $51.75    plus any shipping

It isn't that long ago that we were happily paying out that kind of money for a KES400 based 20mw blu ray build. Same money now gets you 100+mw, now that is a bargain.

This is not a cheap hobby but you can cut your costs by:
Building an LM317 (DDL) driver.
Make your own heatsink out of washers (or do away with it and keep the duty cycle shorter).

You have missed batteries off your list, and if this is a first laser you will need a charger as well.

I'm not from an english speaking country, and i don't know what washers are.. :p

I've searched google, but didn't help.. Please also say how to make my own heatsink out of "washers" :) (FOUND IT, HOW SHALL I PUT WASHERS TOGETHER, WITH GLUE!?)

Can you link a guide to make that "your own" driver? (Must not be so hard, i'm new.)

To the battery part, does they have to be rechargable? My father works at a place they sell lots of different batterys, he gets em cheap.. Idk with rechagables.

Leukoplast

What do you mean? I've seen other link to DX and other places.. Isn't that legal?

Not sure if you can fit a rkcstr driver in that host, but he makes excellent drivers. The smaller hosts need tiny drivers. My Pocket Mini is smaller yet! Still a good kit for DIY:

Now if you want a really tiny host, take a look at my 'Micro Chrome' build:
