Please eliminate signature size limit for veterans

Hello!

I've recently run into some problems with my signature, because my collection includes so many wavelengths. I've had to remove the measured power for each laser because of this.

I think many veterans are having this problem as well.

Since veterans often have large collections, and it's not likely that we'll exploit signatures to spam, I suggest that the 2048-character (incl. BBcode) limit be removed for users with more than 1,000 posts. I don't see any real downside to this.

I think that's a good idea Sta! Many veterans might have to limit what they can include on their signature simply due to character limits which limits how unique some members can make their signatures.

I vote yes! :D

Good idea. Maybe not 1000 posts. Maybe rep. I've noticed several members who don't post much but are veterans and have rep. Just a thought.

Certainly possible, but with the reputation inflation we've seen recently it is possible that in a few months/years a single +rep will award enough reputation to cross the limit immediately. Perhaps 6 months registration + 500 posts would be more reasonable.

Gotta say no for my vote. Well, only partially no. While I do like the idea, I just think it'd be too much trouble for what it's worth in the end. Very lengthy signatures are a bit obstructive and usually need to scroll twice as long through a thread then it should normally be. After all, the size limit is there for a reason.

I think as a compromise though would be to maybe increase the limit as you set a smaller text. That way you can fit more information in without taking up too much screen real estate.

Or even another compromise would be to render your signature in a text editor using the horizontal plane as well so that you can get more information into that wasted space instead of having a very long vertical list. Just screenshot that and then set it as your signature.

Just throwing out a few ideas.

Part of the problem is that BBcode is included in the calculation. This is not reasonable, because colors get counted instead of text. If BBcode were excluded from the measure, it would be fine, but I am not sure the forum software supports this. I don't think it supports changing the limit by text size either. So the only real way to get around it is to screenshot (like Jordan does) or to remove the limit for trusted users.

I think the BB code for colors etc. is probably taken into account and extra text is given to compensate for that.

You guys have my vote to increase the text length whether a veteran or not, if they become too much we have the ability to turn off text or signature viewing from within the user control panel under other options. I turned signature viewing off myself due to not wanting to see my own signature clutter up the thread lengths. I've been concerned it is doing so and asked one member what he thought, but it turns out his is just about as long so he didn't think much of it himself. I don't know if there is a best solution for this when some members, including myself, see long sigs as somewhat obstructive. Maybe to reduce the length of my own sig. I should BB code to smaller text size, I see some are already doing so.

Edit: This post is in response to CrazLaser's question he just deleted asking me why he cannot PM Me:

I turned off my ability to allow others to PM me because a former banned member, probably CrazyJay AKA VisualGreen, among other multiple identities, appears to keep making sock puppet member names here and keeps harassing me with PM's. IT MIGHT NOT BE HIM.... but who ever it is, I have decided to turn off PM's. I have been randomly adding senior members to my contact list slowly as I think of it, when I add you then you can PM me, otherwise you will have to ask me questions in posts as you just did.

By the way, I just changed my signature text size to 1, this is much better for me. Because of that I turned viewing signatures back on again.

I think this is a good idea. I have had to also limit what information I can display in my signature. I think as long as you are reasonable with the length of the signature, it should be fine to allow a lengthier option regardless of rep/posts.

I have been in my control panel trying to see if there is a way I can put all of my links on another page within the forum, then just like to that, but there isn't a way to do that I can find. I might have to create another page hosted somewhere else to do that.

Well for the listing of lasers owned, we do have a Member's collection section of which we can link back to I suppose. As for the rest, there isn't really many options available.

When I was new here I was seeking information but was asking the wrong questions, so didn't get much help. Because of that I have put all of the most useful links I could find in my signature, at least, covering what I was seeking information on. Laser optics! That's where it is at for me then and now too, except for a recent detour of interest towards pulsed YAG lasers now, but that can involve a lot of optics too, as anything to do with lasers, when I think more about it. I need to find someone who can answer questions about YAG's, I posted some the other day and have a lot more to ask.

Yes, your links are useful to have. :)
I don't have any first hand experience with YAG lasers and only know of their NLO applications. I am sure someone will be able to answer your questions.

I agree with you Sta, I've had to juggle things around and eliminate info. to stay under the limit. The code really eats into the usable characters.
I think removing the limits, or at least upping the limit would be fine, and shouldn't create a problem.

I've that a simple (-link-), such as the one to my "Coleman" uses 95 characters.

If it were votable, you'd have mine! :yh:

Edit: @Alaskan, I personally find the links in your sig. very helpful, I'm sure that many new members also appreciate them.

I'd like to see a link to a list instead, but I'm sure I'm in the minority in that respect. They've gotten so bad, I disabled the showing of signatures years ago. Using the forum is like scrolling through a gay pride parade otherwise.

I have just modified my signature to make it smaller, but without losing too much information. :)
