Hi all, I am going to buy some stuff from DTR, a 12x blu ray module too.
I have got an silver pen laser host. It looks really cool and a 405nm ~400-500mW inside it would be quite awesome :D. But does it heat up much?
I don't want to kill it. Should I use a bigger host with a heatsink?

No you're good to go.. duty cycle is ZERO in these type of builds!!
If u must build a high power pen i would recommend a 12mm copper heatsink directly screwable to the bottom of aixiz module.. Just about 10g of copper chunk threaded tightly would make the build much more practical.

Okay, so i will build it with a heatsink. What i the max power i can use in pen builds?
Maybe I will get somewhere a PHR-805 and make a 100mw pen out of it ^^

Edit: so you were faster ;) . Wow that looks awesome :D . Does it get hot?
I dont have any heatsink for it now.In the pen a 12mm module fits perfectly in.

I dont have any heatsink for it now. The pen a 12mm module fits perfectly in.

It does get warm with continuous use but a pointer like this should hardly ever need to be turned on longer than a few moments at a time for pointing, lighting a smoke, or charging up some glow in the dark stuff.

The heatsink inside is an aluminum cylinder about 20mm long and 12mm diameter with ~9.5mm internal diameter for the flexdrive v5 (soldered directly to the diode). It is pressed onto the back of the Aixiz module (with the threads removed).

EDIT: Here are some details in case you want to try it: http://laserpointerforums.com/f38/awesome-12x-chrome-pen-64505.html
