Hey, I was browsing around for some batteries, and I came across some 2800mAh 18650 batteries from Orbtronic. Does anyone know if they're any good, or how they compare to Sanyo? Thanks.

Well.. if you are refering to the ones Orbtronic are reselling, it should be alright... if you are refering to the batteries with Orbtronic as the Brand name, its unfair for anyone to tell you if they are better or worst unless that person did proper reviews for both and then he would also need to know your definition of good...

If you are asking just based on assuming, which is the only thing I can offer. It would be that Sanyo should be better. First, Sanyo is a much bigger company and has a specialise department in batteries.. Orbtronics? I dont even think they did any R&D. Or at least its nothing compared to the millions and millions Sanyo has in this field.

BUT... at the end of the day, the only reason why its such a hard question to reply is because its very hard to keep track of average batteries. People only tend to remember the Best. Trust me on this you are probably thinking now you dont want to spend to much on this etc etc.. all have same output maybe try other brands etc. save money here and there etc.. at the end.. you will still end up buying AW batteries just to feel how good it truly is...

Epic;

There are several LARGE companies that make quality #18650 cells.

Sanyo/Panasonic is one top player.

LG and Samsung are also big quality suppliers of cells.

The 2nd tier mfgs. have less reliability . . .
and many times, some safety concerns.

I have used hundreds of lithium-ion cells in lights I have built.

Very quickly, I realized that the "name brands" had 10 times greater reliability.

That is the reason . . .
I provide only "name brand" cells.

Okay, cool. Yeah, I've heard lots of horror stories about Chinese made batteries exploding and what-not, so I wanted to make sure I went with a reliable manufacturer. Thanks.

According to Soshine: they use SANYO cells for their 2800mAh 18650 3.7V model with protection PCB.

Orbtronic has an agreement with Soshine to start production with Orbtronic name on this exact model 18650 batteries (and many other top of the line products) with a few modifications (even better PCB protection).

After months of research and testing Orbtronic team made important decision - to go with Soshine products.

In my opinion brand name is good BUT:

Two important downside points are:

1. No PCB protection ( PCB protection that actually works is extremely important when working with Li-ion chemistry)

2. Flat top ( For folks who want to use two batteries or using flashlights/lasers that by design cannot make a contact to the positive terminal )

That is something to consider when you are going to use flat tops (no raised positive top button).
