Older Kenometer , Can it be made to read 2W+ ?

The title says it all but I have a Kenometer with a coherent sensor. Can this be modified to read 2W+ ? at 2W it goes to 1 and sticks until power is lowered.

or ill take a trade for aportable unit that does 2W+

This is an original Kenometer.

I think the sensor can go up to those power levels. If I recall, the Kenometer just uses a voltage-sensing LCD screen to detect the readings, with pot for zeroing. I'm not sure what the output from those sensors is; Jerry might know. Maybe like 1mV/mW or something? You'd need to connect the sensor head up to another circuit or microcontroller to get the readings from it. Maybe check the Open LPM project to see if it can work with it.

Regardless, at those power levels you should probably take the sensor out of the case anyway. Even with lower power outputs it traps a lot of heat that throws off the readings. I should probably move the sensor in mine to some other mount because of that very issue.

The Cohrent thermopiles used in the original Kenometers are good up to 10W.

It would be a simple modification to add multimeter test points on the housing so you could use a DMM to read higher powers, or simply just replace the panel meter on the front of the unit for a 10v panel meter with 1mV resolution.

There is some crap on the sensor's surface.
Not sure what it is...

BTW I've said it hundreds of times before...

The Thermopile absolutely needs to be taken
out of the enclosure to be accurate..
The switching power supply used in the box
is electrically noisy and heats up the inside
of the enclosure over 100deg F that can also
induce reading errors of the very low output
signal from the head...
