Why not lock old threads if some members become upset if a new post is added to them? How old is old? I accidentally posted in a thread that was just under a year old and was neg'd and insulted by a member for posting in it.

Because occasionally the original poster or a major contributor or an expert of the field will come in with relevant and insightful data or updates. The problem with necroposting is that it is usually done by laymen posters who do not actually contribute anything at all to the thread. Asking questions is NOT contributing, it is baiting someone else to contribute, and this is what most laymen posters don't understand.
