i have couple of questions hope you can help me out.
ive bought 2 of o-like 5mW laser module's 7$ each ( pretty cheap)
5mW Green laser diode module/DIY - eBay (item 180463152689 end time Feb-28-10 20:21:33 PST)
and i think they labeled the power way off, what would be conversion factor from current and voltage input to the current regulator compared to laser power.
when it arrived i first checked it with 3V battery and it drew 0.27A of current. Seller's page on ebay declares the module to be up to 0.35A
By fiddling with the pot i got it to 0.35A (3V) and the laser beam started to show faintly in daylight, the laser was on for short periods up to 10 sec so it couldn't heat up too much.
Then i wanted to see what the module could withstand. I slapped the module on a old CPU cooler, thermal paste in between , powered it from ATX power supply so that was 3.35V on the max possible setting the module drew 0.374A , the beam was clearly visible in daylight , could smoke black wire insulation tape , or piece of paper colored with a black marker. the module wouldn't heat up in 30 sec bursts but the current regulator on the driver started to heat up .
something tells me that these aren't 5mW modules :thinking:
any idea what power rating could they be?
so the input power was U=3V , I=0.35A => P=U*I=1.05W
what would be output power of the laser diode? just worst case scenario, im not into precise measurement.
