welcome to the forum.
Now on a saftey note if you are buying cheaper greens and they dont work all that well or at all DO NOT LOOK INTO THEM IF THEY ARE SHOWING A BIT OF RED COLOUR.
This is IR light and can be REALLY bright on a dpss green laser but your eyes dont realise how bright it actually is until you realise that you cant see anymore.
I dont want to scare you off but just scare you into realising how dangerous they are.:):)

Thanks for the welcoming comments! I have already spent many hours reading up on the varied nuances of lasers here on LPF. I cannot wait for my lasers to arrive and I am already gathering parts for my first build. I took electronics 1 in high school, and due to the advanced level of Electronics 2, a bunch of us were bussed over to the local community college for Electronics 2. one of my first jobs out of high school was at Batteries Plus, so I learned a bit about batteries back then, I have had various technical and assembly jobs over the years, and most recently I have been doing Laser Printer Repair and other various electromechanical repair type jobs.

I am going to hope that my knowledge and skills will make it easier and more fun to jump right into building some very nice SAFE high quality lasers.

On a separate note, is there anybody from around Rockford Illinois that would like to meet up for coffee or lunch and show me some of their projects and help me get started on my way to a new hobby?

Thanks again everybody!

Welcome to the forum! You'll find everything you need here for laser building. Sounds like you have good skills that will let you get going quickly in this fascinating hobby. Since you work in electronics repair, you probably have access to dead DVD and Bluray burners. This would let you get into the building of red or bluray lasers easily, as you can get your laser diodes from these burners. If you don't do your own machining, there are lots of forum members who sell hosts and heatsinks.
