Hello everyone,
My name is Anthony and i am completley new to lasers, and i'm really only getting into them because of my other hobby... Reef tanks :D

I have been doing research on ridding my 90gallon SPS dominant tank of aptasia and majano anemones, and came across an article describing how a few hobbiests are using lasers to safely burn the nems out of the tank with great results.

According to the article that i read they were using a 1w blue laser to fry the little buggers.

Just wondering if any of you gurus have had any experience with this, or even heard of this, and secondly I'm looking for opinions on which laser to get.
I'm not trying to break the bank or anything, so i guess what i am looking for is the best laser at the best price to burn pest anemones at a max of about 12" away.

Any help or thought would be greatly appreciated.

I myself dont have any reef tanks, but I have read a bit about this, and while it can work, I have read that most Aptasia will pull themselves into their hiding holes as soon as the laser hits them, so you can never really burn them away.

I imagine if you use the chemical methods or physical methods you could use the laser to burn away any little pieces that are left.

Interesting requirement. If you're looking at a 1W blue laser, you should go to the 445nm section to read a little more, and maybe the Buy/Sell/Trade section if you're looking for a quick buy of a ready-made model or a kit.

Are you looking to be going into lasers as a full hobby? Or just to solve the problem you are facing with your reefs?

Either way, do read THIS THREAD (VERY IMPORTANT!) first regarding the safety of such lasers and what precautions to take. 1W and above is into the Class IV range (the highest class of lasers). Staring directly at the sun on a clear midday is about 40mW of light into your retina (which blinds you), so imagine taking a hit with a 1W and above!

And a warm welcome to the LPF!

Welcome to the forums! As suggested above, Be sure to head over to the 445nm sub-section. Enjoy your stay!
