I finally did something with that empty CNI pen case... I made an awesome lighter.

The focal point is between 6 and 8cm...
~500mW Multimode C-mount 808nm diode...
Busted my multimeter before I finished so I'm guessing current is about 550-700mA-ish :-[
No power meter either... Anyone know how much power it takes to light a candle?
Duty cycle is about what you would expect from any pen size laser... I've run it for 2 minutes + with no noticeable decrease in power and no noticeable buildup of heat (it's about 65 degrees in my house... brr.)

When I get more time and money I'll give you more details.

There were titles and some information at the beginning of this movie on top of the pictures in the opening sequence, but I removed the text because you guys already know what this is... So forgive the long, boring opening sequence.

HOLY CRAP ! I would so buy one if u would make me one. That candle light was the most impressive to me.

Is it a square shaped output? I have one that is like that except that it is stock CNI, around same power ~450mW

Excellent Burning Laser you got there.... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Crappy music though... Lucky it's a laser forum... ;D ;D ;D ;D

Nice work. :) Great to see a c-mount based project, especially a pen-sized one! Be warned, IR lasers can be addictive ... I couldn't stop at one laser ...

Did you use the lens from the CNI, or something else? Does the output become bar-line further from the laser, like my 2w 808?

Half a watt nicely collimated like you've got it will light a candle. Try some steel wool, your laser should light fine steel wool no problem. Gently blowing on the steel wool as you lase it will really get it going.

Spyderz: No, the driver for the CNI pen is still attached to the X105 module. I wouldn't have the heart to tear up my favorite greenie after all it's been through! I had my friend (who is an electrical engineer) build me a driver with adjustable current. Don't know exactly what kinda driver it is, as I haven't studied electronics as much as I would like :D

Billg: Yes, the output does get distorted, but it becomes more of a rectangle than a bar (not quite a square either). It has FAC. I used a combination of a few glass lenses for a nice, clean, fixed focus. I don't like adjustable focus much.
And I don't think I'll stop here... the power of these IR lasers is too much fun!

What I'd really like to do, though, is try to get a 400mW 635nm C-mount into a pen sized laser, just to see what these tiny hosts are capable of. But those diodes are so damned expensive.

Is there any place I can get a 1-2W IR diode for a good price (and low shipping costs, too)? Preferably one with FAC.
I read a thread earlier that said something about snoctony being out of business...

Laserbee: Next time, I'll put Spice Girls in my video, just for you :D

Thanks guys for your compliments

You ass hole, now you've gone and pushed me into NEEDING a high powered IR laser.  Don't forget the safety goggles!  But seriously, I've been thinking about building a nice IR laser for a while, and I know it can't be that hard!  I believe the 1.5W IR C mounts are around $50 IRRC but I could be wrong.

You do NEED one. I just cut a zip-tie in half. ;D

Thanks for the link, but the seller says it's used... and I don't want a used diode, it could just as easily be dead or close to the end of it's life.
I'll keep searching.

Does anyone know anything about http://www.roithner-laser.com/index.htm?

Roithner laser is probably about as good as thorlabs...
Which means it's good!

Shipping is expensive though.
