While rummaging through my parts bins, I found a PHR 803T sled that I had forgotten about ages ago. The diode was quickly pulled, and I decided to make a 3 x CR2 host for it. The driver is linear, LM1117 with 10 ohm resistor. The driver and switch are on a small messy smt board. I didn't bother to set up to etch, I just cut the traces with a dremel. It works. I machined the host from aluminum, polished it, and anodized it violet. The lens is aixiz glass in a machined brass lens nut. The head is direct diode pressfit. The tailcap is threaded, the head is secured with a setscrew. The result is a nice looking little laser with a measured output of 104mW.

The parts.

Here is a beamshot. Fog was used and the room darkened a bit.

Although not powerful, this is a nice small build and it seems to have come out well.

Hey,

Just saw this thread while looking for details on PHR-803T diodes. I hate to resurrect a necrothread but it looks like nobody noticed this! Thats a great looking host there, +1.

If I might ask, with that driver setup, am I correct in assuming a current flow of 370mA? And that yielded 104mW? I am trying to make a laser for my girlfriend that is powerful enough to display some burning capabilities, but not so powerful as for me to feel irresponsible about putting it in her hands. I will be giving her a pair of safety goggles with it.

Thanks,
Isaac

I have a lowly 50mW PHR 803T Laser and it is powerful enough
to burn wood when focused..

No, I'm not feeding the diode 370 mA. That is a 10 ohm resistor. This sets the current to 125mA, chip is 1117. That driver is a little nasty, but it only took a few minutes to make. You can make a nice laser with a PHR. It will burn, too. Just not like a 12x ...

Ya, I have a 12x now :) It burns the hell out of skin...call me retarded but sometimes I like to feel the heat. Burnt my hand hahaha

...yeah I might be nutters.
