Hello all- new to the forum. found you by way of google while seeking info on a laser I just purchased.

so- I'm a "medical equipment technologist / metrologist" - just a fancy name for a guy who fixes hospital lab equipment like ftir spectrometers, osmometers and all the stuff you find in hospital labs.

I'm from NH but travel to asia & europe a lot to service equipment in other hosp labs.

So, here I am, back in kowloon hong kong for 3 weeks (headquarters for wicked lasers  ) and had some time to waste shopping around in the hk streets. I came across an electronics store selling tons of "high-powered" laser pointers- 1000mw - 20,000mw. Blue, green, purple, red... all the colors.
the prices were 1/3 of wicked laser prices- so I figured I'd finally spring for a blue laser. I bought a 12,000mw blue laser (or so they say) for $100 us dollars and I'm wondering how true the label is? I'm guessing it's not even 1/3 that, but it is an impressive laser.

hit the switch and it emits a super intense thin blue beam straight into space. it'll light a cigarette from 10" distance and it'll burn white paper in a few seconds. it instantly put a hole in my black cell phone cover- and the batteries were only minimally charged. it comes with an assortment of lens, ultra-fire rechargeable batteries, a charger and safety goggles. here's the posted specs:

450 nm wl
12,000 mw power
facula diameter 6m-10mm
operating voltage 7.4 vdc

the laser pointer is about 1" diameter and about 7" long.

there's really no brand name- just a small oval sticker that says "RUNFA 14.10" made in china. I was told by the sales clerk 14.10 is the manufacture date "october 2014" but who knows. I figured I spend almost that on weekly coffee to and from work ;)

I'll probably toss the packaging here, so I can get it back home without raising any eyebrows :shhh:

It was a really cool store- tons of laser devices and all kinds of neat laser gadgets. they also actually had a 20,000 mw laser pointer- but I'm calling BS on that.

I'd love to figure out a way to measure the power of this laser- I'll do some research through the forums here...

If the length was 30 inches and 3 inches in diameter and ran on a wall outlet, and ran on like 10 18650's combined I might think it was 12,000mw!

right?
I know the label is bs for sure- I wasn't falling for it- but I figured even if it was 1w it's still a fun buy ;)

I'm sitting here in my hotel room hoping I don't set off any alarms as I burn different materials. :D

I'll say this- it does heat up fast (the case) it gets uncomfortably hot to touch after about a minute or two of intermittent use- and it drains the batteries really fast.

I have a .200mw red laser at home- it burns dark paper and lights matches about 3" away on a full charge- but this blue laser is way more powerful- even with all the lights on in the room, it gives a clearly visible blue beam.

Please tell me your wearing goggles?

If it is that hot you are over using its duty cycle.

Could be around 1watt or less.

lol- yeah- I'm wearing the goggles ;)

I can't find a duty cycle spec anywhere on the insert or box- no surprise there.
I only have it on for maybe 10 - 15 seconds at a time.

ehh- was only $100- it'll be fun to shine across the lake at night with the kids when I get home ;)

Be very careful can blind instantly. Shining across a lake? I sure hope you know what is on the other side.

As for the laser. If it is NOT from China or if it is easy to return then return it and get SF501B 445nm Blue

that's a great price for a blue laser with that power- wish I saw that first! well, I'm sure I'll burn this thing out fast- I'll buy that one next ;)

here's a pic of the chinese one I just bought- it's so bright, it was hard to get the camera filter to not turn on so you could see the beam!

hmmm... I uploaded 3 pics but I don't see them in the post

Two 3.7v is enough to run 3 diodes but 12w lasers that are handheld don't really exist for prices under $1000. And these lasers you WONT find commercially.

I know it's not close to 12w - but it is pumping out some good power for a handheld- no problem burning things 5' away!

Oh I am very happy you can burn stuff with this. Several new member here on the forum have shown us a link to this laser asking if it is good. Now we can tell them what it can do.

here's a pic of it toasting my cell case at 5' away- it's an instant burn. I can even go back further and it'll still burn it!

You can't tell in the pics, but I have all the room lights on- and the laser beam is as visible as a blue rope! The camera filter is filtering out the room light- I'm too lazy to figure out how to turn the filter off ;)

my hotel room smells like a fire pit after someone tosses a plastic bottle in
