my first Wicked Lasers order (ever)

well i just today recieved my first ever order from wicked lasers, and my first ever class 3b lasers (so i'm new at this :P)... it's a mixed experience.

first of all, there's also a core i recieved in the post on the same day, seems like a nice <5mW green laser for the price, a tiny bit brighter than the <5mW leadlight i own... not much more to say about that really, i personally like the black casing look. though i do have one complaint about the core - due to what they said were stock problems, it took over 4 weeks from ordering to get here. that was mildly annoying.

second, there's the 15mW green, an executive classic, which worked really nicely...bright beam, pretty amazing compared to the 5mW i was used to, touched the clouds etc, then it started developing mode issues briefly after being turned on. soon after, it started fluctuating after 10-20 seconds between off or almost off and full strength, same happened with two pairs of alkalines and one of nimhs, so essentially this laser is now less useful than the fictional ballpoint pen that the customs form stated. i'll post what happens when i RMA it, i'm still not sure if i should get it replaced, or get a refund and spend the money on a nova X-15 instead...

lastly, there's the pulsar, a p125 :) having a visible red beam is neat! this can also touch the clouds very visibly, which surprises me mildly as the beam looks slightly dimmer than a 5mW green, which most of the time *won't* touch clouds... i've told my girlfriend that i'll quit smoking after i've lit a cigarette with a laser, and well, the pulsar happily did that with the caps set (although only when i lit the cig normally then stubbed it out, and relit with the laser). also easily burnt a small hole in paper with a black ink dot on it, not tried it on the black balloons i was sent yet, i'm an odd girl and i'm a bit reluctant to waste balloons on lasers even if i have no other use for them :) it's still very bright on nimh batteries, and it's a very shiny metal case although that doesn't appeal to me as much as black, to be honest.

also want to point out, the red sports goggles are useless for anything except observing someone else burn things with the laser, they block out ALL red laser light, you can't even see the dot. no evidence of a laser at all with those goggles, except if it burns things. the normal red goggles are far better for using the thing :) and dragon cases are neat!

i'm going to try using the pulsar heavily the next week or so, if it breaks too i'm so not gonna be happy but i'd rather it break in warranty than out. whatever happens, i doubt i'll be bothering to order from wicked lasers again, this experience with the executive has just really put me off them, despite all the criticism of WL on this forum i wanted to remain neutral and have personal experience and that experience has really put me off them :( oh well. something i learnt i guess!

That really sucks that your 15mW busted on you. I say get a refund on your 15mW and use the refund money to but an X25 (It's the same amount!) or if you really are in the mood spend an extra $50 or so and get an X65 with case and membership or a plain X85, it WILL be worth it!

I'm very sorry about your 15mW... I'd say get a refund as well and go with Nova, heck, even DX would be better off than that! lol :P

Keep us posted and hope things go well with WL.

here's a pic of the beam - this doesn't seem to show the blob of light at the side quite as clearly as it appears real life

OMG! Were you really holding the button down all that time? That's just crazy! It's just so much worse when you actually see it :o

Yep, that's an internal reflection caused by mode-hopping. This sometimes shows up as a symptom of low quality or dying batteries. If the batteries are new and good quality (not some dimestore brand) then this should not be happening and I'd recommend an RMA. Try Duracell Ultras if you haven't already. Also, what's the ambient temperature where you are using this laser? Is it very hot or cold where you live? Sometimes temperature can instigate a mode hop, but it really shouldn't happen that often.

yes, this was holding the button down all the time... i tried 2 sets of duracell batteries, and 1 set of brand new just charged energiser nimh batteries, all with the same results... i've tried it in a warm room, and outside in the evening when it was cool outside, again, same results...

Would it be fair to assume the title should say:

my first Wicked Lasers order (and last ever) :P

Sorry ;)

Marianne Have you tried Lithium Batteries? I know it is a longshot , but a good blast into the Pump diode / MCA can sometimes cure the mode shifting. My first green was a 35mw CNI, and although not as bad as yours seems, once I switched to lithiums, all the mode hopping stopped, never to return.

Like I said it is a longshot but may just work, if it doesn't, I would send it back for a refund or replacement.

Ps. If you do get some Lithiums, just don't put them in your Pulsar, The higher voltage can fry it in an instant.

Haha, it is funny when people spend so much on wicked gay lasers, and they don't even work right!  My Deal Extreme laser might not be the best, but at least it functions adequately, and I have read quite alot of bad reviews of Steve and his mode hopping lasers!   Nova or DL seems to be a better deal for the $$ if you want high quality and junk ..

been told to RMA it, i'm *really* hoping i won't recieve yet another broken one. i'm certainly going nova next time, i would have been anyway since $500 for a 125mW green or even $370 for 95mW is just far far too much...and an X-105 would make me a happy girl! so, how exactly do i pester them to at least partially reimburse me for postage?
