my first build (lab style phr)

Here it is...Phr803t in axiz module from hightechdealz.com, Rkcstr driver, Aluminum box and heatsink I machined at work, Small fan and switch from radio shack, 9v dc wall adapter I had laying around in my room to power the beast...well it was a beast...I decided to try it out to see if it worked before I mounted everything in the box. Had the driver set at 89.1 ma. When this thing was focused it burned shit so easy. Burned through a red plastic cup instantly. The I tryed it with the little green cap on to use it as like a flashlight. That was cool, Untill the next time I tryed to use it....like 5 min later. And It went LED! I have a thread in the bluray section about it and people are telling me it happened because I was using it with the cap on....Oh well i didnt know you wernt suposed to use it with the cap on....Time to order another one... I was going to order one in an axis module from modwerx because it is a little bit cheaper from them but when i click on the link it doesnt work, oh well ill just order from hightechdealz again. I got the last one in a week i think. Here's the pics, Hope you guys like.

I know this fan probably serves no purpose but to cool the driver if it gets hot, but it looks cool haha

Doesn't IgorT show pics of his builds turned on with those GITD caps? I've turned mine on with those caps on without any problems, never for more than ten seconds at a time tho.

BTW, Awesome build! It's even able to be anodized, which would look even more awesome.

I've seen him post many times not to turn the laser on with the cap on. I happened to me too. PHR with a minute or so on it. Turned it on with the cap on for a few seconds, then it would not burn anymore, then LEDd shortly after.

Your setup is great!

If I may make a suggestion... your current heatsink setup kind of makes the primary component of your build, sit on the outside of the rest of the box.

I don't know if you're able to with the setup or not... But I might be curious to see what it looks like if you removed the heatsink, slid the aiXis module back further into the enclosure, and then mounted the heatsink on the rear half of the module, on the inside of your enclosure. Do you think it would look a little more "lab" like?

Just an idea.

Might I ask why turning it on with a cap ruins it? is it because of all the reflected light back to the diode?:thinking:

Either that or a heat issue. Whatever it is, its causing accelerated degration of the diode. There are a few people that this has happened too, some not. I'll never do it again.

There isn't much point putting the heatsink on the back of the aixiz module, as most of the heat needs to be dissipated from the part you press the diode into. I was milling some holes into my scanner baseplate, that takes ages, I can't imagine how long that took!

I figured that PHRs don't even really get hot... plus the part of the module that the diode is pressed into, would still be in good contact with the aluminum enclosure..

After 30 seconds PHRs get really hot. I had one in a small, finned heat sink and it got so hot you could almost not touch it.
