Hello all,

I recently salvaged a laptop for it's heatsink and fan for a 3d printer so I decided to also salvage the laser stuff.

The only problem is, I have no idea what kind of LDs I got.

The DVD/CD reader DVD burner assembly

First diode. Looks like a short can

Smaller diode

Same as above. Pins.

Same as above.

The computer is a HP Pavilion dv6750ea. The multimedia drive is an HD DVD ROM with Super Multi DVD R/RW Double layer.

Can you guys identify them and possibly leave some specs or a datasheet?

Thanks

First diode is short can.

What color is the reflection off the can's window?

Green - it's an IR diode.
Blue - it's a red diode.

The smaller diode looks like 3.8mm.

Since it's an HD DVD rom, one of those two must be combo diodes.

By best guess is the 3.8mm diode being combo, with common negative pin, and one pin for Red positive and one for violet positive.

It's just a guess through, could be completely wrong.

Start with window reflection color, we'll work from there.

Thanks eud.

The smaller one looks like it is tinted green so I am guessing the other is tinted blue.

However, as I was cutting the casing around the bigger diode it decided to snap out and bounce around the room. I am now looking for it but its small size will make it difficult to find again.

Also thanks for the correction on the diode's can type

No prob, let me know how it goes.

Feel free to shoot more questions if you have 'em. Better to ask, than to lose a diode.

Looks like I can't find the possible high powered red. Stuck with the lame ir one.

Probably be walking around barefoot one day and step on the pins of the red. :p

Well at least I got some pretty sweet optics right?

OUCH, beware of that! Solder on the pins, lead in it, and toxic stuff in laser diodes, nothing to joke about.

Optics package is cool in every sled, yeah.

Sorry about the bad shots my camera wouldn't focus anymore.

It is a really tiny diode 3.8mm I think, and is open can.

Any thoughts on what it could be?

It's red but if it's been dropped or something, it's probably nonfunctional. Open cans are notoriously fragile.

Still, worth a shot.

If you wanna make a laser out of that, you're going to need a special 3.8mm module, normal Aixiz ones won't do.

Yeah I am going to guess it is dead then. WIll hook it up when I have the time.
