I was wanting to build a lab module violet laser. I was wondering what kind of diode to use and if a round heatsink with a fan like this one

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...Track=true&ssPageName=VIP:Watchlink:middle:us

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102824

would be sufficient to cool it and keep it running in long intervals. I think I will use a phr-803 diode running at 125mw. What would the duty cycle be, I am assuming as long as it stays cool there is not a duty cycle.

if u dont win i can make u one ;) i would use a 803 diode at 150mw, and i run mine around 2min on and off with that kind of heatsink

I like Ambrocio and the heat sink he makes is good.  However, for your application, I recommend this one instead

http://www.z-bolt.com/MODIIIbg-green-laser-module.html

Also, if you are willing to turn your current down just a bit to around 110mW (you will not notice the difference visually), you should be able to run it without a duty cycle

Peace,
dave

Could I run it with the round heatsink I showed and fan at 110mw without a duty cycle or would the one from z bolt be better?

The deeper, thinner "fins" of the Z-Bolt will dissipate heat faster, but at 110mW, you should be fine. One other consideration with the Z-Bolt is that the module will "clamp" in securely so the heat transfer is more efficient and the module won't "slip" out unexpectedly.

Peace,
dave

I think I will make 2 seperate lasers one using 6x violet laser diode running at 200mw using the z bolt heatsink and radioshack fan giving an unlimited duty cycle and another using the phr-803 diode running at 110mw and the heatsink from ebay and another radioshack fan.

thanks for the help
