I don't think it's been done before, so I thought I'd share. It's difficult to see, but the beam makes an indent in the surface (presumably because of the rapidly vaporizing liquid pushing on it) before it ignites. The piece of metal on the left acts as a mirror to reflect the horizontal beam into the dish. 60W CO2 laser was used.

 





Its very hard to see in the video what is actually going on.. too bad!
 
Nice experiment :) you could try with a 445nm 1W laser... to increase the absorption you could use a black dye
