I started a thread over on <alt.lasers> about my latest 'brick' pointer.

A poster there suggested the Sony diodes we've been getting from Greg may not be the SLD1236VL (here:http://www.sony.net/Products/SC-HP/cx_news/vol37/pdf/sld1236vl.pdf) but rather they may be these diodes:http://www.zet.biz/Laser/data/SLD1239JL.pdf

Looking at the product code on the side of my diodes I see "5HJL" "0058", whereas the product code for the 1239 is listed as "xxKL" so these may not be it. Then again the SLD1239JL does end in "JL" so they could be what we've been using. Someone look at their diodes and post the product code.

It would be nice to see a 'real' datasheet for the 1236VL, including the markings on the can to identify it.

One of two dead diodes reads:

My code is:

aha! You see the 'JL' is in the product code section, which leads me to believe these diodes are the <SLD1239JL> and not the Sony 16x. I imagine the Sony 16x would end in 'VL'.

I would think so too...very interesting. I wonder which is the better diode...the price of the SLD1239JL is higher from zet.biz.

First I want to say I'm very happy with these diodes, and I'm not trying to knock Greg.

Assuming these are the 1239JL (and I think they may be) we need to understand these diodes are rated at 100mW using about 150mA of current. Amazingly they can be pushed to twice over spec (200mW @ 300mA). However the life is probably dramatically shortened when pushed so far over spec. Instead of a couple 1000 hours it may only be 10-50 hours. However it's only a $20.00 part so who cares, fun while it lasts.

The 1236VL is only rated for 80mW... :p

Yes but it is rated for 250mw's pulsed, where as the SLD1239JL is rated for 180mw's pulsed. However the SLD1239JL is rated for 100mw's cw.

flogged...I am not knocking Greg's diodes either. Even if we had no idea what we had, we do know how powerful these diodes are. Many of us have driven them to the hilt and I know they are the best deal...hands down.

You are gonna have to contact him directly, not through PM's either. He has left LPF and is no longer posting, nor reading his PM's

They still are an excellent deal, I agree. A single mode 100mW diode laser for $20.00 would have been an unheard of price just a few years back. And fortunately for us these can be pushed to 150-200mW... the only question being how long they last pushed overspec.

I will be ordering more of these diodes. The next one I make I'm thinking of not pushing much over spec, say 180mA of current. That may yield a long lasting laser with a power level of ~120mW.

uh...has anyone just plain asked greg?

Well, that's just it. Off his StoneTek site he's selling these diodes as Sony 16x (SLD1236VL).

I would like to know too, a few days ago I pmed him about his site, and he said that he is no longer monitoring his site, and I'd have to e-mail him for an invoice...

anyone know why this happened? is it because of the mother fuc--king s--on of a b---itch who sued C0ld, or his surgery?

Just wanted to add.. I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill here.

The difference between the two diodes (Sony 16x and the JL) is not great. They DO work well for pointers.

It's entirely possible Greg was not aware of this, that is they were sold to him as Sony 16x

It's also entirely possible the 1239JL is more suitable for use as a pointer - it does have a higher max CW rating (100mW vs. 80 mW).
