identifying the laser diodes

Hi all, this is my first post, so try to take it easy on me.:yabbem:

I recently acquired 2 sleds from BD drives, one from a 4x drive, and one from an 12x drive. Unfortunately I don't know which sled was the 4x one, and which one the 12x one. I have harvested the laser diodes, in the hope that there would be identification on them, but no such luck. The diodes looks exactly the same, so is there any way of identifying which one is which? (other than to run both at 300mA, and see which one pops), like looking at what current it starts to lase, or something like that?

I do believe the 4x drive laser would lase much earlier than the 12x...

You might want to try to build an incremental current driver to see which starts lasing first.

thanks, will build up a driver tomorrow, and see if I have any success in identifying them.:thanks:
