since it is reflecting a good deal of light back to the laser diode

I just took the glass piece out of the training lens by unscrewing the retaining ring that holds it in place. Now i have something that maintains the look of the laser, but doesn't rob power like the standard lens. I would only use the standard lens in a very dusty environment, or where I was concerned about the laser getting splashed with liquid.
