Interesting stuff, though most of it concerns gas or solid state lasers, not so much laser diodes.

For those reading for educational purposes: In diode lasers population inversion is achieved by an electrical field.

A rough analogy is that a HeNe laser is basically a neon sign tube with mirrors on its ends, and a laser diode is a LED with mirrors around it. Ofcourse that is not the entire story but perhaps a concept to keep in mind when reading that article.
