Hello LPF! Just want to say thanks for all the info you guys leave here. Been my main source of gathering info for starting my collection!

A little about me: I live in Los angeles, CA. Work in audio (game sound design) full time and am interested in almost too many things.

Lately I've been researching lasers a bunch and have placed my first order :D (200mw 532nm Green laser module 200mW 532nm Green Laser Module (3V 11.9mm) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme)

I also ordered a few different 5mw lasers from ebay to mess around with star caps and whatnot :)

Planning on building a 1w-2w blue laser once I'm sure this is for me :)

Looking forward to continually getting great advice from this community, and happy to finally be a part of it!

Going to go try and find which goggles I should purchase for using the 200mw and future blue 1w+ laser. Any suggestions while we're at it? :)

Cheers!!

Welcome to the forum. For goggles, I will recommend you to get eagles pair. They are one of the best.

Welcome, and don't expect that 532 module to be 200mw, should do 100-125mw, which is still great for the price. I started with a similar one (rated 200mw), too, and have owned several. They are a lot of fun.

Thanks for all the welcomes!!

and thanks Jstr for letting me know about that. I just wanted something bright enough to be able to enjoy on clear nights star gazing and whatnot, but not too powerful that I would be uncomfortable using around groups of people (if we are all outside, looking at the sky).

Is this decent logic to you guys?

I will of course be extremely mindful of any aircraft and of my surroundings in general before using this laser outdoors.
Does this just seem like a bad idea? How high of mW will you take outside and use in empty-ish areas without goggles? (for sky viewing or pointing things out on very distant hills/mountains).

Cheers!

Hello Nyquist, welcome to LPF. I recommend you add CA or Los Angeles to your profile so it shows under your name, othwise no one will remember where your from, we have members here from 30+ countries. More people will answer your posts if they know what country or state your in, especially if you ever ask where to buy something.

Never use goggles outside, when outside you need to see the beam to know where it's going, with goggles you can never see the beam. Be sure not to use your laser outside within 10 miles of any airport and be sure not to shine it in the flight path of an aircraft, you don't need to shine it directly at an aircraft to get arrested. Since you are in the Los Angeles area I suggest you avoid attracting too much attention to your location, green lasers are more visible from farther away.

Thanks again, I hear you loud and clear. Will follow your advice - the last thing I want to do is draw negative attention to myself or to this hobby!

Also I added my location

Thanks for the info! Glad I'll be able to enjoy my beam outdoors without goggles :D

You could buy 5 of those for under $30 with free shipping and they can take the same 3V as the one you purchased but can also take up to 5V so you could use a single fully charged lithium cell (4.2V). That 5mW rating is a joke, it's just like what you already purchased for $30;)
If you want ones that can't handle a lithium rechargeable voltage and are what you just ordered you can buy these:
https://www.fasttech.com/products/1620/10000626/1057303-5mw-532nm-green-laser-module-3v-119mm
Those are slightly shorter than the 5V rated ones.

It's not me being critical, just trying to be helpful.

Hey Pman, thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it. Your posts in other threads have been very helpful to me as well by the way :D

Let me make sure I understand you right: Are you saying that that "5mW" module you linked will be just as powerful as the 200mW module I just bought? :O Or is it only when I buy many of them and combine them somehow?
Sorry, I'm a bit slow in this subject still!
