Help with chosing laser for pump diode.

Hi as there are going to be some new laws in Aus concerning lasers I am hoping to build a laser that will use infared light so the cops dont get me in crap.

I have read up and asked a few questions and the best diodes seem to be pump diodes from dpss lasers. I have found a couple of 5mw green lasers on ebay that are quite cheap and i was wondering what kind of output they might have.these are the two cheapest ones:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/5mw-5-mw-532...ryZ14954QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Also how many mw do you think the ir diodes would be and would it be cheaper to buy the diodes buy them selves, if so where can i get some. They dont have to be 808nm ether any ir is fine.

Thanks.

Very powerful IR diodes can be had on ebay for very cheap. A 5mw pointer may only have a 100mW pump diode. Could be more or less but its a toss up.

Here are some 200mW 808nm diodes for cheap: http://cgi.ebay.com/200mw-808nm-las...kparms=72:552|39:1|65:12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

These are 9mm diodes, which wont fit in the aixiz module but WILL fit in the meridith module. Less than $50 and 500mW. Also 808nm: http://cgi.ebay.com/500mw-808nm-las...kparms=72:552|39:1|65:12&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14

Hope that helped!

EDIT: link fixed.

Thanks but the link for the 9mm ones is the same as the 200mw ones, also it says TO-18 dosnt this mean that there will be more than one dot?

Hi Carulli,
I fixed the link so it should bring you to the right page now. The "TO-18" refers to the actual package of the diode, which is the standard 5.6mm diode. These should have one beam just like any other diode (TEM00)

Thanks alot, I may buy some of the 200mw ones if I can. Just to be sure the 200mw rating is for CW isnt it? I saw a few diodes that were 200mw pulsed. Also just for my own knowledge can you see any slight red from the 808nm light?

Yes you can see a very deep red light. It will look very dim even at 200mW so looking into it is definitely a bad idea. I believe the diodes are rated for CW as snoctony usually rates his stuff for CW. I would e-mail him and ask to make sure though!
