to help me practise extracting diodes i have been pulling apart any old cd / dvd drive i can find in the shed. 99% of them dont work

and i opened up a creative 24x cd-rom and i found this and i cant for the life of me figure out what kinda diode it is

i also found this curious little diode.

The top one could be an optical sensor. Just guessing. I've never heard of 2 diodes in a CD rom.

There are many reasons it has that many leads, originaly many things came in that can other than laser diodes there could of been op amps and many different amplifiers back then it's old tech.
the reason it would have that many leads as a laser diode is it could have a sens diode in the can also to send feed back to the driver, heater or cooler to keep the diode at a certin temp, more than one laser diode inside the package, many different reasons for that many leads ;)
