I have had some lasers for a while now including a obviously massively over spec DX 5mW. I am just now getting into building my own lasers and have designed both a ~120mW 405nm and a ~1.4W 445nm lasers. I am planning to build them if i can scrounge up the cost of the parts and equipment. I am not new to electronic and have build a few circuits with ordinary LED's to test my ideas before moving on to expensive laser diodes. I currently have some eagle pair goggles on the way which should hopefully arrive at some point.

How do you know that the 5mW DX is "massively over spec"...

I can tell it is massively over-spec because looking at the dot on my wall hurts more than staring at a 75W bulb at ~2', that and the fact that my other <5mW lasers are around 1/10 as bright as it. THX for the nice welcome.
