Did any of them hit the market before the death of HD-DVD? If so... there has to be a surplus of them somewhere, and I'd like to know just where that is.

Good for you.

I didn't ask if one ever existed, I asked, ""Did any of them hit the market before the death of HD-DVD?"

I doubt that they ever made it to mass production. It was not long after that announcement that the movie studios jumped on the Blu-Ray Only bandwagon and HD-DVD entered the downward spiral

Aren't the replacement sleds for the 360 HD-DVD? :-/

Yeah, but those aren't HD-DVD-R.

There's an ebay store selling notebook Toshiba SD-L902A HD-DVD-R for $249.95, but that seems to be the cheapest I can find. Seems like a ripe off given the current status of HD-DVD.
