After watching "Dumb Ways to Blind", I had to join this forum. Hilarious! Been lurking for a bit. Like many others, a certain discount laser site lead me here. I figured, if I would pay that much money, I needed to know more.

Very glad to have found this forum. It's saved me hundreds of dollars already as I was about to buy a shiny new overpriced laser. Thanks for all the accumulated knowledge. I'm still shopping, but arming myself with as much of this forum's wisdom as I can first.

Grew up with a passion for lasers/masers when I lived near Bell Labs in NJ for a couple of years in the mid 70's. Star Trek phasers and Star Wars sabres only fueled that flame. Bought my first laser in '88: a 2.5mW red HeNe (I think it's HeNe but might be wrong) from a 'Science' catalog for $300. What fun! Still have it but it doesn't work.

This forum has saved me from doing any of the fun/stupid things I did with that laser in my youth. I don't have much to post while I'm working my way through as many posts as I can. Just thought I'd check in after reading all the newbie posts and stickies.

Thanks!

I am guessing you find Wyoming a much nicer place than NJ, I have been to both states and don't care much for NJ, I prefer more remote and less crowded places, however when going through Wyoming I remember we had to stop and spend the night in a motel because of a storm and then a tornado passed by only several miles away that night. Here in Washington we only get about 4 tornados a year and usually no one ever even sees them. Anyway welcome to LPF.

Thanks! Pic added. It's my old HeNe laser shining on a crystal in the hands of a pewter dragon taken in the dark with film camera before many of you were born. I'll have to work on the signature. Maybe when my laser list is interesting. Right now, most of my lasers are tools: distance measurer and laser level and little red pointers.

You're right! NJ is fine, I lived there part of my childhood. I chose Wyoming for much the same reason you might choose Washington. Crowds are tough for me. Wyoming drew me for the climbing and "freedom of the hills" years ago. I'm not surprised about the storm stranding you, I am surprised about the tornadoes. They're pretty rare here. And I didn't know you get them in Washington. If we get them, they're mostly harmless like yours. I've only heard of two bad ones in the 20+ years I've been here. (But I'm not always paying attention.) We do, however, get wind. A couple of weeks ago, the wind was blowing about 117 mph 1/2 hour north of me. But, they're used to it.

Thanks for the welcomes!

Oh, that Wyoming wind...You haven't really lived until your driving down the highway and see a tractor/trailer get blown over 300 yards in front of you.

The Dude Abides.

At least I know there's one member that knows we don't all ride horses to work. And I don't do cowboy hats or country music. Give me a laser light show choreographed to Dark Side Of The Moon... I feel a project idea forming...

I have a cowboy hat. Anytime I've broken it out for Halloween it gets a lot of laughs. Kinda the fish on a bicycle thing.

What? You mean even Wyoming has moved into the 21st century? Yet another paradise destroyed by civilization. Now look what is going to happen to Cuba. If I had the money I would take a trip there as soon as they lift the travel ban because in several years it will be full of casino resorts and cruise ships.
