Re: FS - Hi Power Lens - 25 to 30% Increase vs. Ai

It would be interesting to get comparative power figures for

- AixiZ acrylic lens (already provided)
- AixiZ acrylic lens with opened back
- AixiZ glass lens (660nm only)
- AR coated acrylic lens (BR only)

How do these effect the focusing?

The focusing lens assembly is closer to the laser diode for collimation.

As you move the lens away from the LD the beam size increases rapidly.

Very cool. What's the beam diameter at aperture, and is the dot "clean" at a distance, i.e. no "rings" around the dot?.

I havn't measured the beam diameter, but I don't see any rings at all.

I had previously checked the power with the Aixiz glass lens.
From memory, it was about ~10% higher for the Red open can...
a few mw higher for the BluRay.

I have not seen a coated acrylic lens for the BluRay.

Plastic lenses are not suitable for high power Blu-Rays, Reds & Greens ...

Re: FS: Hi Power AR Lens - 25-30% Increase vs. Aix

With all the talk about beam pattern, I thought I would post BluRay & Red beamshot photos thru one of the new brass lens assemblies:

The white hot spot measures ~1/8" @ 14 ft for the BluRay 6X @ 251 mw.
The white hot spot measures ~3/16" @ 14 ft for the RedOC @ 288 mw.

Actual photos of beam projected 14' on my white DLP projection screen, which has no gain.

 Besides the power increase from the short FL 400-650nm AR coating...

you also have a tighter, better collimated beam.

I have measured 300mW's with Meredith glass in an open can build at around 430mA's to 450mA's...

But this new lens would not make more power than a Meredith glass lens in a red build. This lens will give more power for blu-ray. And more power for red when compared with AixiZ acrylic.

But not more power for red when comparing with Meredith Glass. (about 5% less for red when compared with Meredith glass) If you have not tried Meredith glass, then how can you make a comparison?

My 405-G-1 glass lens modification does work very well for red as I mentioned in my thread...

But not as good as the Meredith glass lens does. (for red)

I just did a comparison of the two glass lenses in my 'Ice Box' TEC cooled open can build which is set at 450mA's.

* 405-G-1 glass lens - 302mW's.
* Meredith glass lens - 316mW's!

That's about a 5% increase using the Meredith glass lens for red. (vs the 405 lens)

Both of these glass lenses are much better than acrylic for red as well as blu-ray. For red, comparing to AixiZ acrylic (back opened), you will get at least 20% more power using Meredith glass.

Note: All comparisons to AixiZ acrylic is with the 'back opened'.

Comparisons: Including AixiZ glass:
Compared to AixiZ acrylic, I get only 4 to 5% more with AixiZ glass for red. AixiZ glass has 3 elements. This is why it has less gain than the other 'single element' glass lenses, even though it is AR coated for red. Plus, AixiZ glass in not as 'short focus' in design.

Comparisons: (red open can)
AixiZ acrylic vs AixiZ glass - Gain 4 to 5%
AixiZ acrylic vs AR coated acrylic from Virtual Village - Gain 10%
AixiZ acrylic vs Meredith acrylic - No gain, or very minimal gain
AixiZ acrylic vs Meredith glass - Gain about 20%
AixiZ acrylic vs 405-G-1 glass lens - Gain about 15%
(New broad band glass lens from Meredith - About 2 or 3% less than their 'optimized for red' glass lens with red)

Comparisons: (blu-ray)
AixiZ acrylic vs 405-G-1 glass - Gain 26 to 28%
Meredith glass vs 405-G-1 glass - Gain 18%
AixiZ acrylic vs AixiZ glass - 7% less with AixiZ glass for blu-ray
(New broad band glass lens from Meredith - About 3 or 4% less vs my 405-G-1 glass lens with blu-ray)

P.S. LarryDFW, If your data sheet is different than this one, then you and I have different lenses. (your data sheet looks similar. But it seems like some of the information is missing) I know that the manufacture does offer different AR coatings for the same lens design. Maybe you are getting a different coating than mine.

Have you compared a Meredith glass lens?

This is the full data sheet for the 405-G-1 glass lenses that I am getting...
(Data sheet for this 405-G-1 glass lens)

Note: I would like to share why I chose my mounting method over other methods...

The lens will fit 'sloppy' in the AixiZ glass nut, unless it is drilled to the precise size needed for the lens. If the lens is just sitting in the retaining ring area, the remaining 'smaller diameter' of the lens nut that the top of the lens will sit against. is not fit properly, and could even chip the glass.

Not that it will happen, but it could. I am talking from experience. Yes, I chipped a lens trying it this way. This, among other reasons, is why I chose the modification that I came up with.

Even though it requires:

* Enlarging the aperture with one drill size.
* Drilling out the nut to fit the 405-G-1 glass lens sitting on a tiny 'lip'.
* Making a custom spacer to retain the lens. (my custom spacer/retainer sits on the 'rim' of the lens that is made for mounting it)

And... Not only is the barrel of the AixiZ glass lens nut too small in diameter for this mounting method, but the threaded area is too large in diameter for the O.D. of the lens. This is what I mean by fitting 'sloppy'. I guess if it was glued in place, and perfectly aligned, then it would work out. But not a good way to mount the lens. (IMHO)

On the other hand, my method also leaves room for the 'finger grip' focus ring to be installed 'all the way on', and still allow focus! ;)
Jay

P.S. For Meredith, there are two different glass lenses available now. I have tried both of them. I use the best one for red with my Meredith glass fit for AixiZ mod. Their new 405 coated lens is a broad band coating that is decent for both red and blu-ray. But not as good as the 405-G-1 glass lens for blu-ray, and not as good as their original 'optimized for red' lens that I am using for my Meredith/AixiZ mod for red.

P.S. I believe Meredith will be replacing their 'optimized for red' glass lens, with their new broad band glass lens.

Re: FS: Hi Power AR Lens - 25-30% Increase vs. Aix

Hi Jay;

Jarob quote 12/09 -
I have a 'chipped' 405-G-1 glass lens in one of my personal lasers (just a very small crack on the outer edge of the crown) that doesn't affect the output power or beam profile in any way.

In talking to the lens manufacturer, I was told that the lenses I received had an AR coating with a...
loss of under 0.4% from 400nm to 700nm.

He also stated that they had a different AR coating with a more limited bandpass.

That is the only difference that I can account for my RED power results on my Scientech Power meter:
Each test was performed with the lens focused to infinity.
I believe that is the proper method for testing power thru the lens. The Aixiz plastic lens was brand new.

I have confidence in my meter, and did the tests with lenses focused to infinity in both cases.

I have NOT tested the Meridith Lens,

but I do not think the Meridith will outperform this lens assembly with the "RED" AR coating.

The Meridith Lens has a longer FL and smaller NA.

I think this lens provides the tightest Red beam !

EDIT - A 3rd party has agreed to test the Hi-Power Lens Assembly with open aperture lens,
against the Meridith Lens. I am still awaiting their results.

Received all my metric taps, dies and drills today.

This should allow more accurate brass lens assemblies ...
