Q: Who invented the laser?
A: The actual inventor of the laser is lost in a storm of controversy, claims and counter claims. Most historians will agree that the first recorded operation of a laser was on [highlight]7th July[/highlight] 1960 by Dr. Theodore Maiman at the Hughes Research Labs in Malibu California. Dr. Maiman’s laser was based on the theoretical ideas of Albert Einstein, Dr. Charles Townes and Arthur Shawlow. (See A Brief History of Laser Light Shows.)

No the first laser was in May 16, 1960, I remember because there was an entire thread made because of the google logo http://www.google.com/holidaylogos.html but it was invented by theodore Maiman it was in July 7th 1960 that it was publicly announced on the news. http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/284158_townes.html

The laser came about only after the maser which used the same stimulated emission principle proposed by Einstein in 1917 for a coherent output of microwave electromagnetic radiation.
