It would be a 1.2x3 metre full RGB 7 segment wall clock with brightness adjustment, sound detection and fully expandable to any other kind of sensor input, including serial data and an onboard RTC.

I have already designed the PCB, which would cost around $50 in components to populate.

I think it would count as the most epic clock on record if I did it ...

So, should I? :p :D

EDIT: I am! Check out the 2nd page for the new design :)

Why not? You have the entire schematic done already!

Jesus I want to see this for an epic countdown, if only New Years hadn't pass yet!

If built you will never again have an excuse to be late...
Cool project. Go big or go home, as they say.

What are you going to use to house it? Have you thought about putting the LEDs behind tinted plexiglass to hide the emitters, only allowing the light to be seen?

I am thinking of using 1200x600 ply sheets, and using polystyrene cut out to the correct digit shapes on a laser cutter, then overlaying it with something like polypropylene. Each digit will be separate, so it's at least somewhat practical to move :p

Re: To build or not to build ...

So I've been trying to figure out the layout, and it seems as if trying to squish the digits onto 1200x600 (A common wood panel size) would make then too skinny, seeing as my LED strips are 500mm long.

I modeled it with 1200x900 panels instead, which is also common, and it looks a bit better, however it's kind of bordering on ridiculous size now, with an overall size of 1.2x4 metres.

Yes, that coke can is to scale :)

building it that size is not a problem, as long as I can find styrofoam and styrene sheets in that size for a reasonable price.

This thing will put sparkfuns wall clock to shame :D

I guess the big upside to it being enormous is the lack of weight. This will weigh but maybe a few pounds if you're using styrofoam.

You'd never be able to complain about not knowing the time again when it's that huge and in-your-face

You could almost wear an LED suit and 'become part of time' :D

Hehe, despite being somewhat lightweight, it's gonna draw a whopping 60W of power at full brightness. However, at full brightness, this thing is brighter than your average street light :D

Thus why it'll have an ambient light sensor on it.

Would be even more awesome if you could find Nixie tubes of that size...

Re: To build or not to build ...

Weather proof it, and toss it outside your house in your backyard.

I'm sure your neighbors will appreciate it. The wont need watches anymore, they can just look out into your backyard. :tinfoil:

If you have the wall space inside go for it. Its an instant conversation starter.
