Hi
Im new here and to the world of lasers. I want to build my own and have a Toshiba CD/DVD-ROM DRIVE model no. SD-R1102 hanging around not doing any thing.I think it is an 8x. My question is, will this units diode be suitable for my first build?
I know you probably have been asked these questions many times but would very appreciate your input.

For practice, sure. Otherwise you are wasting your time if you want something that burns.

Not sure, might be a flat diode. You might have to pull it out. As long as the DVD burner is at least 16X it should work. The flat diode will work too, but you'll have mounting issues.
