Hi everybody.

We are form Hypernoika HackerSpace en Barcelona (Spain) - Hypernoika | Barcelona HackerSpace - And we are talking about a new project :D - We have a little fab-lab with a 3D printer RepRap Mendel Prusa, http://reprap.org/wiki/Prusa and now we are talking about mounting a CNC X/Y 2 axis laser cutter, low-cost and totally opensource using standart components and code :D and to publicate everything with assembly tutorials for everybody :D

We have a little experience with lasers (we have various simple home-made DPSS 532, 405 ,455 and 635nm) used sometimes for artistic purpose.

We think the main problem with a CO2 tube laser-cutter is the consume of power, the risk of working with powerful 40W infrareds and the complexity to work with these materials (mirrors, safety,...).

We investigated and we found this stuff : eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices :twisted:

So we contacted with the seller about the cutting possibilities, the optics, the aluminium cooler and the power supply. The seller answered us to buy directly this module : eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

It's 2,5x much expensive than the diode, i asked for more explications and we can buy all the spare parts to build a new one!

We need :

The laser diode : eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices
The aluminium case with the optics : eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices
And this power supply : eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

So everything is better and the price seems to be correct. But this power supply only gave us 2W output, we talked about this theme with the seller and we had this answer :

if you need the power supply for the laser diode, you have to add a logical signal on it. this is the most important issue for it. if you can add it, it can work well with the 5w ld.
ld have to work in circumstance with non-dust and non stractic, otherwise it is easily get burnt.
if you are confidence to assemble them by yourself, it is pleasure to do business with you. but as you know, we have production Confidentiality, we cannot offer you the datasheet of how to assemble them together.
sorry about the confidentiality and we will thank you for your kind understanding.

We asked him if the control was by TTL signal... And we received this pathetic answer :

TTL is different with the logical signal. and sorry that we have our rule to sale, we cannot offer the key technical spec to others.
thank you for your kind understanding
Merry

:shock: :shock: :shock: :shock:

Confidentiality? :gun::gun::gun:

So we decided to found informations on a specialized hobbyist website :D

Our answers are the followings :

-What type of materials we can cut with this type of diode?
-Is there any PDF or technical documentation about this diode?
-What about this power supply? How does it works and what is the logical signal?
-Is there a way to build a home-made power supply of this diode type LM317? Or using a mosfet and send a duty-cycle to get a powerful cutting impact?
-Do you know where we can buy a laser diode like that or more powerful at correct price (250€...300€ max).

Thanks for advance for helping us and to share your knowledgeand experience about this theme :D :D :D

And sorry for poor English :|

Best regards!

That laser module is likely to be able to cut dark colored paper, cardstock, maybe corrugated cardboard and thin sheets of dark plastic.

It is likely that buying that is going to be a waste of your time. The 808nm can be reflected by some substances, especially if it is white or transparent and the laser will not cut it.

Going with a 40W CO2 laser will yield much better results and can cut almost all materials since the wavelength is absorbed by pretty much everything. You will need a ZnSe lens to focus the beam to a fine point.

CO2 lasers are also easier to protect your eyes from. Simple plastic safety glasses will block 10600nm (CO2 laser wavelength) while 808nm protection goggles can be expensive. As long as the engraver is housed in some kind of non-flammable enclosure it will be quite safe.

Hi!

Thanks for your answer!

We are looking now after Co2 stuff !:wave:

:thanks::thanks:
