They're actually building the 100kw laser for the new f-35, They will use the lift fan's shaft which produces 27,000 shp to power a generator for the laser. Very freakin' awesome!

That generator would have to be of proportions too large to fit on a fighter.

Know what happens when that tank gets blown to pieces buy a little bomb ? ? Lots and lots of money waisted, but imagine that beast slicing you in half haha

Believe me, one of the reasons why the f35 won over the f32 was because of the specific turbofan and lift system it uses. The sole reason for this laser is for that fighter. Nothing ever surprises on the things we can do nowadays, and the stuff they do tell us is just the tip of the iceburg.

I read that a few years ago they had a 10kw prototype that could burn through 2 cm's of steel in 6 seconds. 100kw is the bare minimum they say they need for a weapons grade system.
