Edit 2: This suggestion is NOT ABOUT BEING SCAMMED (another very legitimate risk with this option). It's about trying not to upset a temperamental company that that we depend upon. You can risk your own money if you want.

We're already in hot water with the Sci-Fi fiasco, and this is not something that PayPal is okay with as it's a violation of their terms if you're selling something. Do you really need to share your payment method on a public forum post? There are other ways of communicating on the forum

Please consider this for your past, present, and future posts as they're easily searchable if somebody wants evidence.

Saying you paid somebody by this method is just as bad as saying you want payment by it.

I don't know that they would do much, but better safe than sorry. It might help prevent a headache for our admin down the road and help keep our accounts safe. Remember that we're all affected by this as a community, and it's not just you who could face restrictions if something happens.

Thanks for considering what I had to say. A lot of you have been posting about your payment methods which has really raised my concern.

I always pay trusted sellers that way here, but the list is very short. Even if you do have reason to trust a long term member here selling something, what if they have been absent awhile and they used too simple a forum password? Someone could hack/guess a common PW and get into their account, providing their own PP email address for payment. Although your trust in the member may be well placed, you could get ripped off by such a scheme..

Alaskan, what I'm saying is not about scams, it's about the fact that people are violating PP terms and openly posting about it on a forum that is already involved in another situation of PayPal's interest. Scams definitely are a bigger risk with this option though.

People can take their own risks with their own money, but blabbing to the world about it is something that can affect us all if PayPal notices and collects the evidence we've laid out for them. :shhh:

Other forums (albeit bigger) have specifically forbidden the mention and use of making transactions this way due to complaints/threats from PayPal themselves.

Yeah, I've only mentioned PP in that I have always had good interactions with them. I am careful not to conflict with their user terms agreement.

I understand, wanted to pass on the possibility of a scammer using that method. I've had sellers ask me to pay as friends and family to save them the extra amount PP takes out, but if I don't know them, I will just pay the extra percentage they would loose instead. I won't buy anything through PP from a seller that way unless I know the person is trustworthy.

Edit: PPal will never connect us with an account when using anonymous names between us, no worries in regard to that, but if a sellers company name is mentioned it probably isn't good. It's so rare I will pay that way, one out of 200+ purchases I imagine.

Just wanted people to be aware that there are other issues with the method besides the scam risk. Definitely good practice to avoid using it with unfamiliar sellers.

They may not be able to connect us with our actual accounts, but I'm sure if somebody on their investigations team really has it out for us, it might not be that hard. There are users that are more open on their personal info though, and I'm sure the forum itself uses PayPal to operate. May not be an issue for particular users, but their posting about it may very well affect others.

I'd just like to see people be a bit more discrete about the specifics of their payment methods.

Yeah. I really tried to word the OP to be vague enough, but obviously, discussion has made it clear. Hoping c0ldshadow can at least help get the word out on the issue. If he does, deleting the thread would be a good start.

it very easy to dig these up even if we delete the threads...

when ever we post something data were send as package across the net....and government agency has system in place that make copies and stores these info so they can look it up anytime....(they can even see all your conversation on social media with out accessing your account).

Don't ask me how i know this, and don't ask me how, and don't try to find out, all i can say say is i'm that guy got hired by the gov to collect data and stalk millions of people over the net some years ago.....

They're temperamental, and they're changing their "fraud-prevention" algorithms all the time. It's just a precaution that really isn't that hard for members to take.

Instead of saying you send your money via this method, you could just talk about how trustworthy they are. Instead of saying you want to be paid this way, you could ask for a PM.

Edit: I've heard stories of them sending nasty grams to forum admins before, but that's about it that's gone down. They do ban accounts that are too unscrupulous with this type of payment, but that's not relevant to the forum.

Fortunately, I don't think PayPal is a nefarious government organization, and they're probably more likely to give them our data than take it or go through the effort of hunting it down specifically.
