I finally got around to dissecting the "5mW" green pen that is often sold in a 405nm/Green combo on Ebay.

First, it's a bitch to get out of the barrel. Press fit all the way. And yes, I buggered the end of the module trying to get it out of the barrel.

Here's the whole module, unscrewed. I am sure that there was a spring between the DPSS xtal module and the output lens assembly on the right.
Things went POING when I unscrewed it. The spring has jumped to another dimension somewhere. The threads on the pump diode module (left) allow the adjustment of the focusing distance to the output lens.

Next, DPSS crystal module and intermediate lens. If it's a two xtal DPSS, then one of them has to be very very small (like the size of the input mirror on the right).

Pump diode driver board top (minus the spring).

Since the only thing holding the xtal module in alignment with the pump diode is spring in the module, it may be possible to tweak a cranky pen back into operation. But that would mean getting it out of the barrel.
Possible, but not fun.

Are these green pointers truly 5mW ? Did you measured the output ?

Almost all <300mW greens use an MCA to generate light, so the crystal you showed, with that bit of reflection on the left, the tiny stripe of white, that's the KTP, they're bonded end to end. Nice pictures by the way.

Re: Macro - Thanks! I have much higher-end cameras, but my fave macro camera is an old Nikon 990. One stock, and the other converted to NIR.

Re: 5mW - No power meter, but it's way over powered. The pump diode is running at ~200ma.

The 405's from this vendor are supurb, also over powered. The greens, well, the reliability is pretty bad, but they were selling for ~$10USD with free shipping so I can't complain - much.
