Diode pulsing questions

The pulsing of the 445nm diode in my Spartan is pretty interesting as it's something i haven't seen before. Why do the diodes do this? What causes them to do this and about how many times does it pulse/flash per second?

It's the driver. It's pulsing however fast the driver is delivering the pulses.

Is it intentional, or just a badly regulated switchmode driver?

In some cases pulsed operation can be beneficial to the efficiency of diodes, especially when they are ran at much less then their maximum current rating on average.

For me, it was a battery that didn't have enough charge. Solved everything on my DIY

I think he means it pulses rather fast, impossible to see at first glance. I guess it's visible when waving the laser. In such case it must flash under 500Hz, because otherwise it would not be visible at all (imho). I would try to use DSLR with preset time (let's say 1/100s) and take a picture of moving laser. You would see pulses on the picture .. and you will be able to count them.
