So i was looking for my camera charger when i came across a box of power plugs. i was looking on the back and there are a couple that say 5v @ 400Ma. Would this work if hooked directly to the diode of an open can x20 red?

no those things aren't regulated and will probably be putting out a lot more then that.

I wouldn't, a lot of those chargers are only half wave rectified which would not be good for an LD.

An LM317 based driver costs cents, takes a few minutes to make and test.

GoRdOn_B;

You can use the 5 VDC supply, with a couple of requirements:

First, is it a switching supply ??
If so, it will state 100-230 ACV input.

The output of most 5 VDC supplies is usually 5.1 VDC.

So I would start with a 6.2 ohm resistor rated @ 1 watt.

If the diode voltage is ~2.84 VDC, then you should have about 365ma.

The diode needs a good heatsink at that current level.

Try it and check current and heat rise.

P.S. See if you can find a lower voltage switching supply.
I have used 3.3 VDC and 4.2 VDC plug-in supplies.
