I built one of the original cree maglite mods years ago and love it.
:thanks: Jayrob
Only had to rebuild once after if rolled down a cliff and later that day, into the ocean, at night, and continued to work.
It shook the driver loose (was super glued at the time), and it failed a few weeks later.

So about two years ago... sorry i've been away from forum forever.
I was playing with some lenses from a rear view projection tv. I had them laying around after building a death ray from the fresnel lens, like you do.
A friend picked up the lens and put it in front of the light and lit up the hunting lodge 300 - 400 yards away
in maybe a 50 or 60 foot wide square.
(2 story, 2 rooms wide with center hallway. you guestimate)

Its like a search helicopter light with visible beam at night. but i cant get those pics without fog
Onward...

Super easy mod if you can find the parts:
1x Suped up Maglite
1x Projection TV lense (not all are the right size, but if you find one you find 3)
1x 2" to 4" flex coupling from plumbing store
1x 4" pipe cap for lens cover
1x 2" hose clamp

On my model lens I just broke off the screw tabs with a pair of pliers, and
they stuck into the 4" side and held fast. No 4" hose clamp required
remove lens setscrew, usually a wing nut

Cut off any molding on 4" cap so it fits close on lens

adjust lens to middle range, and slide on to maglite until a square beam focuses (if led is square)
Tighten 2" hose clamp
DONE!

you can pop out lens assembly from housing since set screw is removed. this gives you normal light with a slightly cut off field of view.
Easy use, easy removal

Sorry the pics are sideways, i took vertical shots and didnt want to make super tiny.

Beam through breath - hedge 60-70ft away
(my car, 2 car garage, 3 cars parked as tight as you can)

slightly better beam visual, but blurred

See jayrobs thread for original beam HERE

Beam shots on trailer 20'-25' away
beam spread without lens, but shroud installed

Beam with lens, remember my phone camera sucks

same shot focused on the beam spot

Yeah, they're not terrible, but im always taking pictures of lights, lasers, flame effects, fire dancers, etc. in the dark.
My cellphone leaves something to be desired in these situations...
Cough**DSLR*cough ;)
