Does anyone else here climb/scramble/hike/whatever? I LOVE mountaineering, and it is my main "hobby" if you could call it that. I'm pushing for Mt. Rainier this year, that's the most glaciated mountain in the Lower 48. I also go climbing at Vertical World a lot, that's a ton of fun, too!

So, if anyone does this, post pics/info, and tell a little bit about it!

I prefer to go down the mountain.

Skiing FTW.

Well, skiing is fun too. But there's just something about mountaineering...to see the world open up in front of you is an amazing sight.

This is the last thing I climbed (stac pollaidh):

stac%20pollaidh.jpg

Just a bit over 2000ft , but it's scary, bits of it are like scaling the edge of a cliff :-[

Great view from the top though, and the pictures really don't show how big it actually is :p

I'm hoping to do Ben Nevis this summer, or the west highland way ( 99 miles up and down mountains ::) )

This was the last place I went.

It is big, I mean REAL big!

They don't come any higher!

It was tough doing the 2 mile, (vertical height), trek but when you stand under this giant and realise it's another 2.5miles, (vertical height), to the top you can appreciate the lunacy of trying to climb it.

This is Mt Everest viewed from Kalapatha, (probably not the correct spelling!), which is 5,200m. We went on a base camp Everest trip in October last year. Bit of a let down because it was a rip-off but you can't knock the views!

I am now waiting to see a specialist to see if I need knee surgery due to the ravages of the Himalyas!

rocketparrotlet,

Are you using a trekking company for Mt Rainier? A couple of people on my trek have done it and a friend here in the UK has also.

Hope you like the pic.

M :)

I don't do any !!!EXTREME!!! climbing but I do enjoy hikes.
I went to Zion National Park in Utah a couple times. The hikes there aren't tough but the scenery is nice.

@Diachi: Awesome! That mountain looks really cool! I've heard good things about Ben Nevis as well. Have you checked out www.summitpost.org? They've got some great info on that peak.

@Morgan: I would love to go to the Himalayas someday, and I have Everest in my goals. When I am (much) more experienced, I will head out that way- those peaks are amazing. That looks like such a great trip! I am actually not climbing Rainier with a trekking group, but with the Mountaineers, a Washington hiking and climbing organization. It's not like a guide or trekking service, more like an organized group where people form teams to climb mountains. I'm in the Basic Climbing Class right now, a great program if you ever get the time to take it!

@pierce: Zion's a beautiful place! I would love to visit it sometime. I don't do any "extreme" climbing either, but I'm learning how to rope up and safely travel on glaciers. Hiking is wonderful too!

Much, MUCH better way to do it! Congrats. Those are the sort of people you will learn from simply because they want to impart knowledge. I don't pretend to be any sort of a climber. The trek was a glorified walk, and I paid for it, (in more ways than one! My knee is a constant pain!!!). I haven't done any actual climbing, (apart from common indoor stuff), and would doubt I'd even qualify for a Basic Climbing Class, but I would avoid any organisation that will take cash from you to, "climb", to any altitude without making sure you are up to it. I trained for the trek and I wasn't foolish, with ideas above my station, but these things are serious; Even Ben Nevis!

Enjoy what you're doing and post some pics when you're back. We do these things because they are there. Isn't that why we're here?, (LPF!)

Crack on!!!!

Nice, I'm glad to see someone with a similar attitude towards it! I'm sure you would qualify for the course- there's not much required to get in, but to stay in requires constant effort. You might want to consider looking into a mountaineering course around you- I'm sure there is somewhere! It's a great hobby. About my pics: I haven't really been keeping updated on it, but I post some of them on here:

Good luck with your future pursuits!

I've not looked at that site yet, I'll take a look. Ben Nevis is actually easier than Stac Pollaidh because it's no where near as steep, although it's a longer walk ( as the peak is over twice as high as Stac Pollaidh ).

Stac Pollaidh is really cool from the top, it's all rocky, and there's actually this big rock that sticks out of the side of the peak that you can stand on  There are also great views ( in fact there was a WW2 spitfire flying about BELLOW us when we were at the peak ;D ).

I'll try and find some of the pictures that we took from the top.
