HI, Im new to the community and am excited to start out my new hobby of collecting lasers. Im currently looking to buy a green laser and am stuck between two lasers. My intention is just to have a laser to pull out and point at stuff and impress friends with. I am wondering if you guys with more laser experience would help me out.

the lasers I am trying to buy are either a 5 in 1 200mW 532nm Open-back Kaleidoscope Green Laser Pointer Pen (2*AAA) for 30 dollars free shipping

or a 100mW 532nm Half Steel Mid-Open Green Laser Pointer Pen (priced at 36 but i can get it 70% off with a coupon)

I dont know what open back or mid open means and also want to know how much of a VISUAL difference there is between a 200 mw and a 100 mW. thank you guys.

Get the 200mW one. Its a good starter laser.

You have to take power statements with a grain of salt when buying off laser retailers. In reality the 200nW is really around 50mW, and the 100mW is around 20-30mW. Sometimes you're lucky and get an on spec laser, but the chance is low.

T-Mart doesnt really have a great reputation here.

Try O-Like. Their lasers are close to spec, and affordable.

Dont forget the goggles. These high powered lasers will blind you before you can blink. Also never point it at people, animal, cars, aircraft, ect. Its against the law, and an $11,000 fine if you get caught shinning aircraft.

What did you use to test your most recent Laser to see if it
was on specs....

Jerry

I called a favor from a teacher I'm good friends with. She let me into the school's lab to use theirs. It probably won't happen again. :undecided:

The reason I ask is because 2 years ago I went to the Mcgill
University Laser Lab department in Montreal to use their
"state of the art" Laser Power Meter to see how accurate our
LaserBee I was.

We were shocked to see that their Top of the Line LPM was
an old analog meter that was last calibrated 15 years earlier...
After showing them the LaserBee I in action we were asked
where they could get a hold of one...
We brought along a few Lasers.... We were also surprised that
the head of the department had never known about or had
never seen a 405nm beam...

BTW... there is an [EDIT] button that allows you to easily edit and
add to your last post...
Double posting within minutes is considered bad forum etiquette..

The one I used wasn't the most impressive one in the world either. It was also analog so I had to keep an eye on it and record myself.

Sorry about the double post. I didn't realize that was against etiquette. Thanks for letting me know. :)
