I am working on a beginner's laser phaser build. I've just ordered some of my parts, and I wanted to know if anyone with more experience had any advice/saw any flaws in my current plan.

The housing is to be a Playmates brand toy phaser. I chose this one because of the lack of detachable phaser, and I thought it might have more room/be easy to take apart. I plan on keeping the sound effects intact, and using the original AA battery compartment to power both the laser and sound effects. (I plan on just splitting the wires from the connector, have one wire go to the laser and one to the sound board).

The laser itself, is to be a 200mw (more likely about 100mw) green laser module from dealextreme. Chosen for fair power and brightness at a low price. It can be seen here: 200mW 532nm Green Laser Module (3V 11.9mm) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

I'm basing the build off a combination jayrobs tutorials and this simple altoids laser by styropyro: DIY: How to Build a Burning Laser Without any Soldering! - YouTube

That's pretty much it. I'll use a microswitch from radioshack for the trigger, and I'm not sure about a heatsink. Do i need one for this build? If so, any suggestions? Also, for safety glasses I thought these would be good: Laser Glasses - UV to Green Lasers Protection 190-548nm :: Laser Safety :: Dragon Lasers

The goal is to build a decently bright laser in night conditions, and pop things like balloons in an outdoor environment, while the phaser makes noise, without killing my wallet or going beyond my ability. I only have basic soldering experience, I've done a few projects (things like splicing a Gameboy cable with a printer cable) but nothing fancy.

One of my dreams as a kid was to make a ST-TNG Phaser I had received as a birthday gift from my father, into a laser pointer. I saved up my allowance and bought a 50 dollar radio shack laser pointer. I then played with it for a while and got to the point where I was ready to try. I ran into a problem removing the actual laser module from the host, then I couldn't get the light bulb mount in the Phaser to accommodate the part once I did get it out. Mind you I was all of about 12 when I did this.

I figured I would try again in the future.

The future is NOW! and I am going to try again! I want to get a fairly powerful red LD, and adjust the beam so that in smoke/fog it is the size of the Phaser emitter, approx 1/2 inch high and 3/4 inch wide. I don't know for sure if this will be possible, but if I put a focus adapter on the underside of the Phaser to make it discrete, perhaps I can at least make it look bigger than a standard infinity focused beam. IDK.

But I am certainly very excited to try.

Any tips aside from the writeup are greatly appreciated, I think that with time and patience I should be able to make a damn nice prop!
