Hi,

I learned something today about battery sizes....

10440 battery is 10mm diameter x 44 long
14500 is 14mm dia x 50 long
18650 is 18mm dia x 65 long
etc.

Maybe I was the last to know :barf:

That's the great thing about this (and many other) hobbies. The never ending D'oh moments when suddenly things that seemed strange, and weird, make perfect sense.

I had my fair share of them:p

Next lesson : Why are the battery notations as 10440, 14500, 18650 etc. ? And not AAA or CRxxx ? :)

another Q,

What is the effect of charging a 3.7v bat in a 3.6v charger.

I'm looking at buying some 10440s and don't know if I need to standardise on the bat voltage of 3.6 or 3.7?

My guess is 14500 notation shows the battery is Lithium chemistry / 3.6V where AA would be 1.5 or 1.25v :thinking::thinking:

Correct:D Lithium batteries, are not interchangeable with primaries, and therefore have their own nomenclature :)

I have some to add to the lithium ion sizes . . .

Rectangular Sanyo 2400mah cells . . .

11mm thick

34mm wide

52mm long.

Built a light with a couple yesterday.

You know... One thing I always wondered myself (well one of them anyway)... why not make batteries rectangular, rather than round?

I'm sure there is a good reason. I just don't know what it is. I do know it's annoying when a battery rolls off the table :p

Back on track.....

Re post #7, is there any practical difference between 3.6 and 3.7V cells and does the charger need to be run at the specific voltage or will a 3.6v charger work for 3.6 & 3.7 bats' ?

Well, the full charge voltage of any li-ion type battery will be 4.2 volts.

Some special ones go up to 4.35 volts too.

LiFePo4 cells go up to 3.6 volts fully charged...

There's some discrepancy with the voltage of cells on some chargers. Try using a volt meter with nothing connected, to see what the voltage is. If it's 4.2 volts, then it's good for li-ion cells.

If it's 3.6 volts, then it's for LiFePo4 cells.

does anyone know of a battery that is preferably about 25mm in height, smaller than the 16340, like to replace a AAA battery holder and provide about 7v of power, so basicly half the size of a AAA battery holder. 2x 10440 and a dummy isn't what i would prefer.
